There’s a great new Morgan Geist mix over on the We Make It Good Website. Here’s what they’ve got to say about it.

Morgan Geist – of Metro Area / Environ / Unclassics fame – dug deep into the recesses of what must be a record collection the size of a mountain to weave together this dustily beautified journey through abandoned early 80s NY. Geist’s selection of late 70s / early 80s electronic tracks exquisitely captures a moment in time when the prevailing disco sheen hanging hazily over the city was being overtaken by the throbbing pulse of murder, drugs, and dirt that ran a heavy current underneath. All in all it’s a mix that captures a certain brand of austere beauty. If that all sounds a little too ‘grown’, we’re almost 100% positive that Mr. Geist threw in some chopped and screwed Arthur Russell for the new jacks towards the very end.

You can go download the mix from their website.

We Make It Good Volume 10 – Moragn Geist Mix

Enjoy.

This Friday’s party makes the Guardian this weekend. Full support all round from our favourite broadsheet. We’ve printed the article below or you can go and read on the Guardian website.

Manchester’s healthy club scene is offering a broader range of music than ever before. Yet since the spirited, eclectic Electric Chair finished, nobody has stepped up to take the mantle; perhaps its melding of disco, house, hip-hop, reggae and soul seems less revolutionary almost 15 years on. Along with Naive Melody, relative newcomer Cutloose is spanning some of the breach. The latter’s playlist concentrates on house, techno and both vintage and modern disco, but with its location at the Chair’s original venue, the residents’ enthusiasm, plus good guests – such as Friday’s Balearic-tinged disco scientist Mark 7 – a similar vibe is on display.

Straight out of Germany, the long awaited First Touch debut longplayer is finally here. During a creative period of almost two years and several unexpected breaks and ups and downs, the two band members nanthara and jelly put all strength together and selected ten fine boogie tunes to please your thirst for authentic true 80′s funk’n'disco grooves. Officially released on the 28th Feb 2009 on their own homebase label Highsteppin records.

The tunes were completely mastered by Reeno at spazzoid studios nyc. The group’s first release got a great approach that hints at more sophisticated soul styles, but which is still firmly in charge of those bass-driven grooves that made the late 70ies disco, early 80ies funk years so fascinating to funkheads all around the world. Originality is the ruler of the set, and most tracks here vamp around in a very smooth modern soul style of groove. Lots of chord progressions jumping around irresistible rhythms, a reduced but effective ensemble arrangement style, and not to mention an armada of synthesizers help keep things clean and mean.

From the smooth midtempo tune ‘all because of you’ to the more uplifting gem ‘it’s yours’, you can’t help but smile. Groove & move to the debut lp from this Germany/Mannheim based funk group, delivering a long lost goodtimesfeel along with the side-dishes of boogie and modern soul. Read about the guys involved and download the complete album for free here, what do you say…

What can I say…Claremont 56 have come up trumps with another blinding limited edition compilation in the Originals series. Following on from where Manchester’s very own Balearic Mike & Moonboots left us, Cult Leftfield Disco DJ Mark Seven lays down a sterling selection chuggy grooves and obscure disco nuggets for our listening pleasure.

Mark Seven, passionate music lover and proprietor of the superb www.juswax.com, is no stranger to good quality underground music. His involvement goes back to the early 80′s where he organised all night parties and illegal raves all over London. He now resides in Stockholm, Sweden where he runs his own record shop Juswax on a daily basis yet taking regular time out to travel the globe in search of stock for the shop and obviously those extra special picks for his own record bag.

Mark played for us back in December when we threw that much talked about ‘free’ Christmas party with our good friends over at Cosmic Disco. Mark is one of the most exciting Dj’s we have had the pleasure of down at Cutloose and if you were down at Bookbinders that night you would no doubt agree with me, his record selection and ability to so many genres of music together are incredible, whilst always keeping everyone locked to the dance floor. You can view the pictures here.

His real strength is his ability to go out and dig for those special records and while most people will just be happy compiling tracks from other peoples play lists or buying the regulation well known classics, Mark is listening through piles and piles of records from the most unlikely sources in search for that next little gem. Buy the CD and you can enjoy 12 of them in the comfort of your own home, there are only 1000 so be quick. Out now on Claremont 56 Records…

You seem to be spending a lot more time in the studio at the moment, is this a conscious decision to concentrate on the production side of things?

Unfortunately I haven’t spend as much time as I wished in studio in 08, I hope 09 will be more productive for that. If it were up to me, I would lock myself up in my studio and lose the key but between gigs and other responsibilities it isn’t really possible. But to answer your question, I am more a production guy than a performer, I enjoy the stage and playing live, however I love to produce tracks.

It seems clear to me anyway that your productions are inspired by a range of musical influences house, disco and techno, what were your early influences as a youth growing up?

I grew up mainly with black music, soul, disco and then later house. Detroit and Chicago have always influenced my music. But also the early Berlin rough techno left its mark. I try, through Soundstream / Soundhack to produce a deep, sometimes dark, everlasting sound.

Have you any new productions in the pipeline?

I have so many unfinished tracks, I would like to bring some of them out in 09 but it will depend on my schedule.

People are looking forward to you playing in Manchester – what is your perception of the city and its nightlife?

My Manchester experience has been mostly through smith’n’hack, which was great fun, the Manchester crowd was great and I hope to give them as fun a night as they have given me in the past.

Did you make any New Year resolutions?

Oh yeah…. More time in studio

Heads up, we have a little bit of extra special news to announce this week. Metro Area will be our last party for 2008 and so far our line ups have been pretty much as good as they get:

THEO PARRISH (Sound Signature/Detroit)
LOUD E (Ambassadors Reception) & BEPPE LODA (Typhoon Italy)
ROLAND APPEL (Sonar Kollektiv)
METRO AREA (Morgan Geist & Darshan Jesrani, Environ NYC)

Not a bad string of parties over 4 months!

We’ll be back in 2009 after the Christmas break and after much discussion at Cutloose Towers we will be leaving Spektrum behind and going back to what we all like best. Think…intimate basement location below the streets of Manchester where once a month throughout 2009 we will be rolling in our own huge thumping sound system and turning the lights down low for a run out of some of the finest guests we can think of. Theo Parrish will be back in the new year without doubt and we already have the fantastic Sound Stream lined up to play for our first party back in February with more guests to be announced soon.

Spektrum is a fantastic venue though we felt it wasn’t the right platform for the guests and the parities we wanted to put on. We sat back and thought of all the amazing venues around Manchester and the same name kept cropping up, the same venue that always has an incredible atmosphere and a superb mix of people.

As of the Friday 20th February 2009 our new home will be the Roadhouse. We can’t wait!

We hope you can join us on Friday 5th December for our last party at Spektrum. Both Morgan Geist & Darshan Jesrani will be joining us all the way from New York City. Early bird tickets have sold out and the remaining advance tickets are flying out. Get yourself down to Junk in the Northern Quarter for tickets with no booking fee or buy online from Skiddle. Last time these guys were in town it was an absolute road block so don’t hang around.

We’re throwing a FREE festive soiree over the Christmas period with the Cosmic Disco guys on the 27th December with special guest Mark Seven (Juswax/Sweden) – late license until 4am, Cheap Beers, Funktion One Sound System all happening at a secret Manchester basement location, not the Roadhouse or Deaf Institute.

Some musical partnerships seem to require a leap of faith or a suspension of our collective disbelief; others progress come along so naturally that the synergy almost seems fated, their work resolutely undeniable. Brooklyn-based Metro Area (Morgan Geist and Darshan Jesrani) is of the latter group without doubt: a beautifully harmonious relationship wherein the duo push and pull in all the right directions without compromise.

Although both listened to pop RnB/electro of the mid 80s growing up in quiet pockets of the East coast (Darshan in Poughkeepsie, New York and Morgan in New Jersey), they independently found themselves drawn to synthesizers and the techy side of producing long before they discovered one another.

As Morgan and Darshan migrated towards equally remote areas of America for college (Darshan staying in the east coast and Morgan relocating to the Midwest) and gradually coaxed releases from the closed confines of their dorms (Morgan even started his label, Environ, in his dorm room), they simultaneously lived their formative years feeling somewhat misunderstood and somewhat misplaced musically.

It’s a sentiment that’s rung true from when they met each other on email lists in the days before internet forums through their early days when the two first teamed up as an avant-garde, creatively unbound production/DJ team.

“It’s a really mixed bag of music, but it’s all really groovy stuff. There’s some not so obvious disco, there’s some sort of really spare and weird NY house tracks – we had to figure out how to make it cohesive. We did a few of our own custom deep tracks and made some little drum tracks and little mixing utilities to throw in there as well… We’re trying to not put in the classic records that we’ve played forever. We wanted to explore an area that’s not mined so heavily, but still have an emphasis on the older disco stuff. So we thought we’d do a mid 80s sort of thing, which is kind of a neglected time period but there’s some really nice records from then. With fabric mix CDs, it can sometimes be so homogenous; it’s like this perfect, classy, very coherent single thought. But that’s not how we DJ, so I think we decided we’d try and touch on a lot of different things, almost like a party mix.” – Metro Area

Fabric 43, an artistically arranged and brightly coloured journey through Metro Area’s vast record collections, remains as reflective as it is forward-thinking. Metro Area deliver a peerless jam-packed mix of Easy Street dance classics (World Premiere’s “Share The Night”) through to 80′s club hits (“Work For Love” by Ministry), with a generous helping of disco and boogie anthems and electropop output from the likes of Premiere Class. Infectious, retro and yet timeless, Fabric 43 dazzles with uplifting dancefloor gold.

Us clowns at cutloose have plenty to say for ourselves at the best of times so thought it would be nice to give you the opportunity to fire some questions in the direction of NYC and find out more about Metro Area.

To leave your question, post in the comment box below and we’ll do the rest.

The best question wins two guest list places to our December party, tea at Jenko’s, a cashmere jumper from Mark and a trip on the log flume with Wes.

Rard Laudy aka Loud-e began DJing in his late teens and was born in the Southern part of Holland near The Hague. He first started out playing acid and electro but true to form and very much in keeping with his chameleon like vibe he was always looking for something more along the funky and psychedelic sound – now you’re talking my language!

This subtle change in direction was brought about because he was sick of DJ’s in the same line up as him bringing the same records to the party. So he decided just to play the playable stuff he found at flea-markets, dusty secondhand stores and in the 1 euroboxes at bog fairs – sound!

Loud-e can be heard playing alongside Alexander Robotnick, Marco, Tako, Dave Clark, Suburban Night amongst others and has had recent releases of his own productions on Ambassadors Reception and Objects of Desire.

When he’s not DJing Beppe is a brilliant producer, a respected consultant and a refined record studio sound engineer. Beppe has remixed over 60 tracks of other artists and produced over 200 different dj sets with every kind of music.

Beppe often says “What pushes a true DJ to sacrificate himself while all the others enjoy the party?

It’s simple. The love of music.

We hope since the launch of the website two weeks ago you have an understanding of what Cutloose is about and what it hopes to represent going forward. As mentioned we hope the diverse range of guests we intend to have playing underpins our philosophy of good music and good parties.

As you are all probably aware we have a Mr. Theodore R Parrish playing in September and we are delighted that he has agreed to play our opening night. Without being over evangelical about Theo; there is something for every music lover ranging from Hamilton Bohannon to the likes of Mike Huckaby and Omar S, notwithstanding his own productions.

Each set is carefully put together like a piece of renaissance art. That alone should be incentive to get Manchester cats down to Cutloose and see Theo at work!

This diverse blend of musical influences is never better shown in Theo’s project Rotating Assembly with house tracks which range from sweet vocals and soulful instrumentals to gritty, repetitive loops. This loose Detroit outfit evolves around 21 people, who exchange talents and energy. All tracks are written and produced and masterminded by Theo, who has given them his (sound) signature sound.

Artists included in the band are: Genevieve (known for vocals with Recloose), Maat Lo (aka Billy Lo), Marcellus Pittman (3 Chairs), Rick Wilhite (3 Chairs), Warren Harris (recorded with Dan Curtin) and Andres. Also newcomers such as Karen Bosco (vocals) John Dougalas (trumpet), King Sunshine & Trent Mitchell (double bass) put in incredible effort to make this release a top Sound Signature title. This variety is never more apparent in the two productions below.

Productions

A jazz flavoured episode: Rust organic

Slow grooves and drums: Stomp

Playing over the majority of the night fusing, soul, funk, disco, house and techno this a night every cat should be present.
