Hunee gives us a breakdown of some records getting some heavy plays in Huneeto land. Big shout out to the Neddy Smith 12 and Larry P Rauson EP which are regular visitors to the Cutloose party.

Neddy Smith – Liberated Woman [ 1982 ]

A very deep boogie record…that all the women…and men love. I first had it on a self-made cd compilation from my homie Ari Goldman from Beautiful Swimmers fame and always thought it was this weird, rare Nigerian boogie song. Well, it is not, but it definitely has this vibe…amazing record.

N’Kouri – Take a Feeling

One of these records with lots of African drumming on it and not much more. this one song has a very minimal percussive beat with triangle and cowbell comin in and out, a bassline and in-and-out fading horn section. I call it my secret African Ricardo Villalobos weapon….

Simon Orchestra – The Fighter [ Instrumental ] [ 1985 ]

Killer instrumental b-side of an awful vocal a-side. Found it accidently. It very useful to make transitions from here to there and reminds me of metro area – when they were kids.

Larry P. Rauson – Love Is the Only Way [ 1992 ]

Wow – what a tune! My friend Serdar from the bleepgeeks family introduced me to this one and called it “adult house” and this is how I feel it as well. Cassio ware is singin and hitting all the right notes. The beat and bassline are just…yup, mature and honest … ehm, hard to explain…you gotta hear and feel it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g7tG349yK_c

Alton McClain & Destiny – Crazy Love [ 1979 ]

Fell in love with this one on the epic “live at saint” mix in 5-parts from Jim Burgess that was circling the waves some time ago. if u ever listen to all the five mixes in a row – u really understand what people in all these DJ-books talk about, when they say “yeah, I wanna tell a story with my records, ….” This record has this very special, frantic end-of-night energy and a break where all the lovers let loose…

In December we’ve been asked to provide some music at The Warehouse Project. We’ll be playing some records on Friday 3rd where the line up looks like this.

Simian Mobile Disco [ DJ Set ]
Hercules & Love Affair [ Live ]
Holy Ghost [ Live ]
Andrew Weatherall vs Ivan Smagghe
Aeroplane
Tensnake
Mark E
Naïve Melody DJs
Cutloose
Greg Lord

A strong line up by all accounts. Here’s what The Warehouse Project say

Simian Mobile Disco bring their brand new club night project Delicitassen to WHP2010, with a line up they’ve curated especially for the occasion. Delicatessen is the precursor to the launch of their new label Delicacies, which they have launched as a platform for their new material. The night is a celebration of the best in disco, house and techno, with some of the best live acts appearing alongside some of the top DJs in Europe.

Joining them onstage are New York’s disco heroes Hercules and Love Affair, bringing their joyous riot of classic house and boogie to WHP, as will fellow New Yorkers Holy Ghost. Legendary rebels and music obsessives Andrew Weatherall and Ivan Smagghe will be performing a very rare back to back set which promises to be truly special, and Belgian remixers extraordinaire Aeroplane will be flying in for one of their eclectic sets. Hamburg’s Tensnake, riding high on the success of his unstoppable anthem Coma Cat, is joined by king of the re-edit Mark E.

There’s more information on the event profile page

There’s no queuing outside the Roadhouse on a night like this. It’s full inside at 11:30. Cutloose regulars have been waiting for this gig for over 3 months; most have had tickets for at least 2. You could feel the excitement that had built when you walked into the club. Easy going soul music pulled you in and the happiness beaming from those inside cushioned you like a well fluffed pillow. People were grinning so wide that you could barely move for the cheek bones. Down at the front it felt like a private radio show. Moody FM; the coolest fucker for a 100 mile radius doing what ever the hell he felt like, playing “the good shit” and none of that “other shit” from the last 20 odd years.

He weaved tall tales, stated odd facts and offered his opinions on most things in life in between records. It’s an odd scene that could so easily (and does in less intimate surroundings) fall head first into a cheesy cliché that detracts from the music. Instead what you get when you hand over 5 hours to a legend in a venue that creaks when you get towards its 250 capacity is one of those rare treats that you’ll cherish for years. As the clock crept into the early hours there was a buzz about the place that’s hard to convey. Things stayed cool and energised. Laid back and easy. You could wander outside for a smoke and converse with a huge selection of Manchester before floating back inside; knowing that it didn’t matter if you missed anything because much more was to come.

The variation in music was huge but Moodymann’s set had a unique sound that was reminiscence of cool Detroit house, which seems to strut – as opposed to roll – out of the speakers. Immaculate productions from the likes of Three Chairs, Eryka Badu and even Led Zeppelin in some ways crystallise the night but it was his persona combined with a shit load of amazing records that gave the night its identity.

Things wouldn’t have been the same had anyone other than Cutloose put it on. Over the past 2 years they’ve carved out their own corner of Manchester. They’re the only ones that turn the Roadhouse into an acceptable venue. Their crowd thrives off nights like this, snapping up all tickets so that the end product is a full room, packed with appreciating fans. This means that Moodymann could do exactly what he did on this night; show up and uproot the place until all that’s left is a pile of cheering lunatics that have a possessed look in their eye and a growing fear at the back of their mind that come 4am, it’s all over.

Words by Ben Thompson

As we mentioned in our earlier blurb for our October party, Justin has been around for some time lurking in the NY musical underground. You may have had the pleasure of listening to his stellar mixes, but in order to give you a real flavour of the man’s talents and an essence of what to expect, we want to draw your attention to his Try to Find Me Vol 2 release on Golf Channel. Released at the back end of 2009, the mix is seamless in its flow from deep disco soul grooves to killer house, raw italo and back again – really getting those feet tapping and that head nodding. Justin has reworked some classic records to great effect including Kamasutra – Night Walk (Dob Jam Dub), Gregg Diamond’s – This Side of Midnight and a personal favourite, Miss Peggi Blu – I Want It All Now, an absolute stone cold classic.

There’s a great new Morgan Geist mix over on the We Make It Good Website. Here’s what they’ve got to say about it.

Morgan Geist – of Metro Area / Environ / Unclassics fame – dug deep into the recesses of what must be a record collection the size of a mountain to weave together this dustily beautified journey through abandoned early 80s NY. Geist’s selection of late 70s / early 80s electronic tracks exquisitely captures a moment in time when the prevailing disco sheen hanging hazily over the city was being overtaken by the throbbing pulse of murder, drugs, and dirt that ran a heavy current underneath. All in all it’s a mix that captures a certain brand of austere beauty. If that all sounds a little too ‘grown’, we’re almost 100% positive that Mr. Geist threw in some chopped and screwed Arthur Russell for the new jacks towards the very end.

You can go download the mix from their website.

We Make It Good Volume 10 – Moragn Geist Mix

Enjoy.

This Friday’s party makes the Guardian this weekend. Full support all round from our favourite broadsheet. We’ve printed the article below or you can go and read on the Guardian website.

Manchester’s healthy club scene is offering a broader range of music than ever before. Yet since the spirited, eclectic Electric Chair finished, nobody has stepped up to take the mantle; perhaps its melding of disco, house, hip-hop, reggae and soul seems less revolutionary almost 15 years on. Along with Naive Melody, relative newcomer Cutloose is spanning some of the breach. The latter’s playlist concentrates on house, techno and both vintage and modern disco, but with its location at the Chair’s original venue, the residents’ enthusiasm, plus good guests – such as Friday’s Balearic-tinged disco scientist Mark 7 – a similar vibe is on display.
