CL008: Gerd Janson live at Cutloose 20th November

No Comments 02 March 2010

Here’s the first in a series of live Cutloose recordings from our monthly party at the Roadhouse. Back in November last year Frankfurt’s Robert Johnson resident; Gerd Janson brought his blend of fresh house and disco cuts to Manchester.

We said back then that he expertly fuses the new and the old and when you listen to the mix I’m sure you’ll agree. We hope your enjoy the mix as much as we did on the night when Gerd made his Manchester debut.

We dropped in at the Deaf Institute to help out with providing the music for the Red Bull Music Academy night where Marshall Jefferson and A Guy Called Gerald were the guests.

Here’s a 30 minute mix showcasing some of the records we played. Enjoy.

In amongst a room full of records there’s an area dedicated to 7s that I’ve collected over the years which have been handcrafted into the mix available below. The inspiration for the selections stem from lazy Sunday afternoons listening to my dad play his weekend purchases. He was a regular at most of the North West and beyond Northern Soul haunts through out the 70s. During that time he amassed a collection of records which he eventually sold to a local DJ in the mid 1980s. Some of the first sevens I bought were from the record fair that used to frequent the Parr Hall in Warrington along with finds on Warrington market. In the early 90s I helped out at Hottwaxx Records in Warrington where purveyors Barry May and Kevin Edwards
educated me by sharing records that at the time I hoped to own one day! That said my knowledge is limited and these days I spend more time and money looking for disco records in dusty basements or charidee shops. This mix showcases some of my favourites that I’ve bought over the years.

  • The Shakers – One Wonderful Moment
  • The Mylestones – Sexy Lady
  • Rosco Robinson – That’s Enough
  • Wayne Gibson – Under My Thumb
  • Major Lance – Right Track
  • Church St. Gang – Just Ask Me
  • The Javellis featuring Nosmo King – Goodbye Nothin to Say
  • Isley Brothers – Tell Me It’s Just a Rumour Baby
  • Jay and the Techniques – Contact
  • Tony Clarke – Landslide
  • The Bandwagon – Breaking Down the Walls of Heartache
  • Chuck Wood – Seven Days too Long
  • Electric Indian – Land of 1000 Dances
  • Mitch Rider and the Detroit Wheels – You Get your Kicks
  • The Impressions – Can’t Satisfy
  • Donnie Elbert – Love is Here and Now you’re Gone

We’ve been pretty slack on the mix front recently so apologies. This week I selected 10 records at random from the racks and recorded them in sequence. There was a couple from the disco cube, some early acid house and a few boogie tracks for good measure.

It’s mixed not mixed with some end to end blends and plenty pop, hiss and crackle from the vinyl. All played in full as they were intended to be heard.

It was enjoyable to make especially hearing records in full and recording tracks that might not always make a mix when compiling one.

Enjoy and I’m already looking forward to making Volume 2.

A laidback mix with a gentle grove from Cutloose resident Paul, slip into a warm bath, read the newspaper and forget your worries. We’ll try to get him to put the playlist up shortly! Enjoy Marble Magic.

It’s nearly the end of the month and time for some new music.

That said this new mix is not so new. It’s remained confined to my Macbook since Summer 2005 and I’ve been meaning to share it for some time on the website or over at Cosmic Disco. It provided the soundtrack to dinner last night where Wes joined me and I gave him a crash course in colouring in Cutlooseclub. I ’superlaxed’ his food as well. He’s claiming it’s my cooking though anyone who knows me will vouch I’m a wizard in the kitchen as well as on the turntables.

There’s music from Gaz Nedada, Sylvi Foster, Heaven 17 and The The plus more. These were some of the records I was playing in the Soap Bar earlier in the evening during my Sankeys residency.

I’ll post a full track listing over the next few days. Meantime download the music or subscribe to our iTunes feed and listen to it there or on your music player of choice.

Look out for a brand new mix from Wes himself next week. That’s if he ever manages to leave the bathroom.

You wait months if not years for Wes to produce a mix and then all of a sudden a pearler like this arrives at Cutloose towers fresh from Block E.

There’s a great selection of records melded together to produce over an hours worth of quality listening. If you want to get your hands on the Gold tin that houses the CD, then send us an email.

Meantime download the latest podcast from resident Wes.
