CL009 : Brennan Green live at Cutloose 16th October

No Comments 10 March 2010

After celebrating our 1st Birthday party with the Linkwood guys we welcomed Brooklyn’s finest in the guise of Brennan Green for our next soiree.

After consuming  a whole bottle of Tequila Brennan played a blinding mix of records from start to finish. Here’s the mix in full from last October. Turn it up loud and pour yourself a shot.

CL008: Gerd Janson live at Cutloose 20th November

1 Comment 02 March 2010

Here’s the first in a series of live Cutloose recordings from our monthly party at the Roadhouse. Back in November last year Frankfurt’s Robert Johnson resident; Gerd Janson brought his blend of fresh house and disco cuts to Manchester.

We said back then that he expertly fuses the new and the old and when you listen to the mix I’m sure you’ll agree. We hope your enjoy the mix as much as we did on the night when Gerd made his Manchester debut.

Krysko – Live at the Redlight – Sankeys Soap 2001/02

1 Comment 02 February 2010

It’s nearly 10 years since most of us were celebrating the weekend inside Sankeys Soap. The club had been previously closed closed down with rumours to never re-open and was eventually resurrected by two local promoters in the guise of Sacha Lord and David Vincent.

After a period of time Saturdays at the club were all about the Redlight having made it’s transition from Golden. The change in music policy brought in new residents and a different direction for the party. With that Manchester debuts were made, headlines created and favourites from the Bugged Out era made their welcome return.

The Redlight ran successfully for several years upon till the club underwent refurbishment in 2006. Again the club changed direction musically and it would have been almost impossible for the Redlight to return.

Several re-union type events were staged with missing original residents how ever they failed to capture the magic and atmosphere created at the beginning of the decade.

Several nights were recorded during 2001 and 2005 by myself or (Matthew) Krysko how ever none have ever really surfaced online till now. Here’s an introduction to some of the music that was played on a Saturday when the likes of G-Swing and Classic ruled and it was all about having the best time ever.

Enjoy.

In amongst a room full of records there’s an area dedicated to 7s that I’ve collected over the years which have been handcrafted into the mix available below. The inspiration for the selections stem from lazy Sunday afternoons listening to my dad play his weekend purchases. He was a regular at most of the North West and beyond Northern Soul haunts through out the 70s. During that time he amassed a collection of records which he eventually sold to a local DJ in the mid 1980s. Some of the first sevens I bought were from the record fair that used to frequent the Parr Hall in Warrington along with finds on Warrington market. In the early 90s I helped out at Hottwaxx Records in Warrington where purveyors Barry May and Kevin Edwards
educated me by sharing records that at the time I hoped to own one day! That said my knowledge is limited and these days I spend more time and money looking for disco records in dusty basements or charidee shops. This mix showcases some of my favourites that I’ve bought over the years.

  • The Shakers – One Wonderful Moment
  • The Mylestones – Sexy Lady
  • Rosco Robinson – That’s Enough
  • Wayne Gibson – Under My Thumb
  • Major Lance – Right Track
  • Church St. Gang – Just Ask Me
  • The Javellis featuring Nosmo King – Goodbye Nothin to Say
  • Isley Brothers – Tell Me It’s Just a Rumour Baby
  • Jay and the Techniques – Contact
  • Tony Clarke – Landslide
  • The Bandwagon – Breaking Down the Walls of Heartache
  • Chuck Wood – Seven Days too Long
  • Electric Indian – Land of 1000 Dances
  • Mitch Rider and the Detroit Wheels – You Get your Kicks
  • The Impressions – Can’t Satisfy
  • Donnie Elbert – Love is Here and Now you’re Gone

Krysko – Live at The Warehouse Project – November 2009

No Comments 30 November 2009

The Warehouse Project enters into it’s last month of the season this weekend. So far it’s showcased a selection of DJs and electronic acts below Piccadilly train station with most parties selling out within weeks of being announced.

Matthew Krysko has lent support most weekends in the main room and the now popular backroom that highlights the musical contrasts within the programming. A few weeks ago Matthew opened up the second room and recorded the evening to share with us at Cutloose.

It’s a great mix which you can download or hit play and listen now. If you enjoy the mix then let Matthew know on his Twitter page. Or leave your messages below.

Linkwood and House of Traps – Resident Advisor podcast

No Comments 04 September 2009

Here’s the Linkwood and House of Traps Resident Advisor podcast from March earlier this year. It’s a blinder with a fine selection of cuts on it.

Edinburgh’s Firecracker Recordings has been one of the biggest suprises in house and disco productions in recent years. The label’s first three EPs sold out quickly and many were happy to see their entire back-catalogue repressed last year. Firecracker’s own Linkwood has since been signed to Prime Numbers, label of Scottish fellow Trus’me. The debut album from Linkwood is expected to be released on that label later this year.

  • Linkwood & House Of Traps – Barely Eagle – Firecracker – Truth spoken by DJ Izrail
  • The Popular People’s Front – Get Down Shep – The Popular People’s Front
  • Linkwood – Who La La? – Firecracker
  • Tony Lee – Love So Deep (Instrumental) – Radar
  • Arcadion – Ghost Feeder – DC Recordings
  • Tony Lee – Reach Up (Acapella) – Radar
  • Q – Voice Of Q – Philly World
  • Alton Miller – Inner8 (Gerd No Vox Mix) – Clone
  • Scott Grooves – Adapt – Natural Midi
  • Pierre’s Phantasy Club – Fantasy Girl (Acapella) – SRO
  • Levon Vincent – Six Figures – Novel Sound
  • Hercules – Lost In The Groove – Trax
  • I-f ft. Fred Ventura – I Cut My Heart Out – Clone
  • The Popular People’s Front – My Baby Stays Out All Night – The Popular People’s Front
  • African Suite – Eddy Grant Medley – CDR
  • Wild Geese – Macho Disco Master – Flashback
  • Kikrokos – Life’s a Jungle – Ron’s Edits
  • Linkwood & House Of Traps – Silver Cycles 1 – Firecracker
  • Linkwood – Nectarine – Prime Numbers

We’ve been pretty slack on the mix front recently so apologies. This week I selected 10 records at random from the racks and recorded them in sequence. There was a couple from the disco cube, some early acid house and a few boogie tracks for good measure.

It’s mixed not mixed with some end to end blends and plenty pop, hiss and crackle from the vinyl. All played in full as they were intended to be heard.

It was enjoyable to make especially hearing records in full and recording tracks that might not always make a mix when compiling one.

Enjoy and I’m already looking forward to making Volume 2.

Modest mouse little nicky staples waltzes into the cutloose studios and delivers a nice little mix to get the week going. Nicky casts off his affiliation with his dark techno roots and produces a sublime disco experience, drawing upon his sojourns from lands afar such as Basildon and Colne Valley. We can only hope he rejoins us again in the real world soon.

Peter Croker – Five O’Clock Shadow [Part 1]

No Comments 30 January 2009

We mentioned that if you send us a mix then we would post the best ones so here we go. First up we have a little cracker from our good friend Pete ‘The Siren’ Croker.

Synths check. Smokey guitar lines check. Congas check. Vocoder check. Ethereal chants check. Slick bass lines check. Wooshy sounds check!

Hailing from Warrington, Peter grew up through the tail end of acid house on a diet of 808 state show mix-tapes and pie sandwiches. He now resides down south in the the big smoke where he can be found playing records anywhere from east-end boozers, strip bars, kebab shop basements to Dalston warehouses.

This live mix of brilliant cut 70s, 80s & 90s mutoid electro disco inflected gems promises to be the start of a lengthy volume of genre spanning mixes. Enjoy.

  • Savage Progress – Hip parade
  • Sapho – Carmel [CJ edit]

It’s nearly the end of the month and time for some new music.

That said this new mix is not so new. It’s remained confined to my Macbook since Summer 2005 and I’ve been meaning to share it for some time on the website or over at Cosmic Disco. It provided the soundtrack to dinner last night where Wes joined me and I gave him a crash course in colouring in Cutlooseclub. I ’superlaxed’ his food as well. He’s claiming it’s my cooking though anyone who knows me will vouch I’m a wizard in the kitchen as well as on the turntables.

There’s music from Gaz Nedada, Sylvi Foster, Heaven 17 and The The plus more. These were some of the records I was playing in the Soap Bar earlier in the evening during my Sankeys residency.

I’ll post a full track listing over the next few days. Meantime download the music or subscribe to our iTunes feed and listen to it there or on your music player of choice.

Look out for a brand new mix from Wes himself next week. That’s if he ever manages to leave the bathroom.

There’s a great selection of records melded together to produce over an hours worth of quality listening. If you want to get your hands on the Gold tin that houses the CD, then send us an email.

Meantime download the latest podcast from resident Wes.
