Cutloose welcome Gerry Rooney into town to supply the soundtrack for April’s party. A serious audiophile with great taste, Gerry has delivered deep disco obscurities and acid house basslines at a spectrum of revered parties across the globe, including Yellow in Tokyo, Full Pupp in Norway and APT, NYC.

Inspired by the acid house cultural revolution, Liverpool born Rooney began DJing in the late 80s. His erudite attitude to music has seen him travel across continents in search of the black gold. As well as developing his own enviable and diverse collection, his pursuit of audio treasure has led to a reputation as a respected record dealer amongst serious buyers. Together with long-standing partner in crime Harvey, Rooney established the pioneering and inimitable disco re-edit label Black Cock records in 1992 “as an amusing twist alternative to what was happening at the time”. More recently, he has launched a brand new label, Lucky Hole with Quiet Village’s Joel Martin and collaborated with Cutloose party pal, Felix Dickinson on the Milky Mouth Orchestra. A DJ of this pedigree ensures some serious revelry is inevitable at Cutloose’s upcoming basement bash!

Cutloose is excited to announce that Rong’s head honcho DJ Spun will reign over the decks for our March party.

Spun has had an embryonic influence on underground US music scene from genre to genre, coast to coast. He evolved from playing in San Francisco bands in the early 80s, sharing the stage with punk luminaries including the Dead Kennedys, to help forge the fusion of house, techno, rare groove and funky breaks that came to be known as “the West Coast sound”. In 2003, he founded genre-blending, leftfield disco label Rong Music, which has recently collaborated with DFA on a dual imprint label and also emanated offshoot labels, Tu Rong and Promo Only, which has made an indelible contribution to the current disco edit craze.

Currently residing in New York, Spun is the curator of P.S.1/MoMA’s monumental Warm Up Music Series, exposing an average of 4000 New York cats to the best in experimental music and live DJs, as well as racking up frequent flyer miles playing at respected parties from Berlin to Toyko to Sydney with the likes of Rub n Tug, the Idjut Boys and DJ Harvey. A renowned producer of disco and deep house cuts, we anticipate a party that will exude a host of classic and future gems from one of NYC’s deepest and most cultivated crates.

Cutloose kick off 2010 with a bang, welcoming Theo Parrish to sculpt the sounds in his distinct maverick style for our opening party of the year. Cutloose fervently advocate Theo’s neat articulation of his core musical philosophy -

Love of the music should be the driving force of any producer, performer or DJ.

Interspersing the disco-based pulse of Chicago house, the automotive electronica of Detroit techno, with more than a nod to the soul and jazz of an esteemed lineage in black music that runs directly from Sun Ra to Sound Signature, Theo’s sets compel a rhythmic assault on your musical consciousness for which the Roadhouse basement will be the perfect setting. Theo’s non-conformist values and passion, entrenched in his own productions and label, will ensure that this will be one incredible Cutloose party. A word of warning – the last time Theo played Cutloose, tickets sold out weeks in advance – don’t sleep on this!

Gerd Janson has been serving the hottest house and disco cuts for years at Frankfurt’s Robert Johnson, where he hosts the long running Liquid club night with comrades Thomas Hammann and Sven Helwig. Like many kids growing up in early 90s south-west Germany, Gerd was a regular guest at Mannheim’s legendary Milk Club, where he eagerly awaited the early morning hours when the pace slowed down and US-style house was the ruling sound. A prolific music journalist (magazines Groove, Spex), Gerd is also co-owner of the respected Running Back label which has issued releases from the likes of Tensnake, Mark E, Prosumer and Move D.

As a DJ who expertly fuses the new with the old, unearthing gems to excite a spectrum of music lovers, Cutloose welcomes Gerd Janson for his Manchester debut.

After a cracker of a Birthday party we’re already getting set for our October soiree down at the Roadhouse. This month we welcome Brooklyn’s finest in the guise of Brennan Green.

DJ and producer Brennan Green is associated with a number of current trends in dance music – house, disco, nu-disco, leftfield, cosmic, post punk, electrofunk etc.– but no fashion or sub-sub-genre adequately describes Green’s trademark sound.

His productions on independent dance labels such as Modal, Daniel Wang’s Balihu and his own label, Chinatown, have an organic feel that is rare in modern dance music. Green’s vinyl-only releases combine both acoustic and electronic instrumentation to unearth irresistible grooves, atypical rhythms and hypnotic basslines. As a remixer Brennan has also found a voice all his own with popular remixes for Liquid Liquid, Lindstrom and DFA.

Brennan’s genre-bending DJ-sets are sure to rock any dancefloor taking a crowd through sounds that span disco, house, techno, dub and rock. His New York parties Pop Your Funk (Along side Roy Dank of Wurst Music Co. APT, 01-04) and Junky Blues (Flamingo, 99-01) were instrumental in pioneering the current underground disco sound and since then he has toured extensively through Japan, Australia, Europe, North/South America playing at events as diverse as NewYork’s P.S.1, London’s Fabric, Tokyo’s Yellow, Sydney’s Madracket and many of the world’s best underground parties. He’s Currently holding down monthly residencies at NYC’s east village outpost Nublu and Chinatown’s aptly named BEast.

Forthcoming are several releases on Chinatown including a collaboration with Arthur Russell.

In keeping with the musical philosophy Cutloose has espoused over the last year, we are delighted to welcome Firecracker Recordings – Linkwood, Fudge Fingas and House of Traps to celebrate our 1st Birthday – for some of the finest in house, disco, techno and boogie and of course, the newest sounds from the Firecracker roster.

Firecracker Recordings is a label and collective based in Edinburgh. Founder and owner Lindsay Todd began his DJ career in 1994, and cut his teeth at the legendary, now unfortunately defunct Edinburgh nights Tribal Funktion and Higher Ground, amongst some of the finest luminaries of the worldwide house and techno scene such as Cajmere, Derrick Carter and Gemini. He has gained huge respect over the years, renowned for his propensity for finding the right track for the right moment.

In 2004, Lindsay set up Firecracker Recordings, with an emphasis as much upon the artwork and overall presentation of the records as it was on the quality of the music. Harking back to the golden era of house music, with a huge nod to the Detroit and Chicago scene, Firecracker has firmly established itself amongst its peers as one of most talked about and respected underground labels, with support from the likes of Derrick May, Osunlade, Mike Clark, Mike Grant, Carl Craig, Danny Krivit, Ron Trent, Stacey Pullen, JazzySport DJs, DJ Spinna, Theo Parrish, Joe Claussell, Jazzanova, Shelter DJs, Lindstrom, Recloose, Idjut Boys, Moodymann and more.

We come together with our favourite super information highway music blog Cosmic Disco for another ‘Thank-You’ to all those who have shown us ever growing support over the last 6 months with another FREE PARTY!

After our now legendary joint party with Cosmic Disco featuring Mark Seven back in December 2008, we’ve decided to a bring a DJ who we feel has the minerals to live up to the occasion.

Felix Dickinson has been DJing and producing music for over 17 years, though because of his many monikers people often believe they’re not familiar with his sound. Yet upon closer inspection, most discerning DJs, realise they’ve got at least one of his tracks in their box.

At 20, Felix organized a four-day free festival in Sussex. Collaborating with the D.I.Y. sound system from Nottingham, and calling on DJs from the Tonka crew. The Police roadblocks and helicopters couldn’t stop the party, as it was pre-Criminal Justice Act, and 4,000 people danced all weekend.

In 1992 Felix moved to Brighton where he got together with a number of close friends to form the monthly Slack nights, which although being held on Monday nights would regularly attract party goers from up and down the country, and would always be followed by an after party down on the beach or some local warehouse.

When Slack finally split it allowed Felix to change direction, and to set up the Ugly Music record label with friend and local record shop owner Tony Lee. The label released music from K-Alexi, Underground Evolution, D.J. Harvey and Jaime Read, among others. It was at this time that Felix began his D.J. residency at the Joint nightclub with Jaime Read (L.H.A.S) and Bobby Coulman (Soft Rocks) where he played every month from ’95 to 2000.

Since his move to London from the South Coast in 2000, Felix has been producing records under a string of aliases including LHAS Inc., Foolish and Sly, Das Etwas, The Mythical Beasts and Dedication.

Most recently he’s been remixing for Jazzy Sport, Far Out and D.J. History; and his new project Fist Club and the Milky Mouth Orchestra with Gerry Rooney (Black Cock) will be due for release in 2009.

His DJing has taken him as far as America, Japan, Australia, Sweden, Greece, Poland, Austria, France, Finland and Hawaii as well as playing at Glastonbury with the New York Downlow.

See you down the front!

In recent years, Mark has co-promoted ‘The Lodge’ and NY Social parties where he has introduced the likes of Prins Thomas & Phil Mison to the US scene.

If this wasn’t enough, Mark is also responsible for the excellent Divine Edit 12″s on Creative Use (’Higher’ being a classic ‘end-of-nighter’) and has also just released a compilation of his favourite records on Claremont 56 which has got people very excited. With further edits and original productions scheduled for release in 2009, to say we are delighted to bring him back to Manchester is somewhat of an understatement.

Danilo Plessow is a hard man to pigeonhole. Since 2003, he’s been producing with Joachim Tobias under the Inverse Cinematics banner with an emphasis on soul underpinned by driving hypnotic rhythmical and percussive elements. Their debut full-length Passin’ Through was released this year, but there’s another reason why people have been talking about Plessow in 2008. He’s the man that’s responsible for the Motor City Drum Ensemble project, producing music which seems to encapsulate the spirit of Detroit despite being made in Stuttgart – a place that is considered Germany’s own ‘motor city’.

His Raw Cuts series of releases saw Plessow take a cut-and-paste approach to house music, splicing up disco and soul loops to create house tracks that managed to be retrospective and forward-thinking at the same time. He also uses the Motor City Drum Ensemble moniker to indulge his techno side, putting these records out on his and Mujaba’s Four Roses imprint.

Danilo’s mix touches all these bases, taking us from subdued disco through to bumpin’ house before going deliciously deep.

Dont miss this one.

Let’s be honest most of today’s club music protagonists are as exciting as dead meat. Or if you wish to choose more friendly words, we agree that they are servants of an alternative entertainment industry. Frank Timm a.k.a. Soundhack alias Soundstream is the great exception to this rule. This boy serves cuisine instead of fast food. But before he reached that state, the true-school Berliner had to graduate from the city’s club boot camp. Awestruck by Berlin’s basements and industrial places, where techno was in its early-nineties prime, Soundstream was overwhelmed by Detroit’s beauty and Chicago’s roughness. Unsurprising, he soon agitated in the coordinate system of the world-renowned record store Hard Wax. An institution that also distributes his labels Soundstream and Soundhack. The first one takes care of Timm’s never-ending love for disco and refined house music (take the ear candy of ‘Love Jam’ for example), the latter is dedicated to cut-up and loop adventures that are better described with folly than the customary house and techno signs. Therefore the scalpel is one of his typical tools of the trade. He chops, dismembers, deconstructs and mills – until he drops. However, he never creates Frankenstein’s monster and does not fall for the risks of this mode of operation: Sophistication and consciousness, safe from harm and also from being nerdy. “DJ tools with an attitude”, as Dr. Dre would say.

The same goes for his ‘band’ Smith’n'Hack. Together with his peer and friend Errorsmith, Mr. Soundhack creates amazing long players like ‘Tribute’ that takes a bow in front of disco’s vast history or incredible remixes. Just listen what they did to Ricardo Villalobos’ ‘Easy Lee’ or Herbert’s ‘Moving Like A Train’. Stripes of italo disco in the one case and a future classic paint of gold in the other. On his own, Timm’s revisions for Anthony ‘Shake’ Shakir, the Olympian Rhythm & Sound duo or Auto Repeat might be the most remarkable ones.

His appearances as a live act or DJ are also outstanding. A look into his box reveals lovely disco 12-inches, Chicago house, solid club classics and dew-fresh jams. All blended, mixed and sliced together with style.

Soundstream makes his Manchester debut at Cutloose in February 2009. This will be our first party at our new home The Roadhouse. See you there.

To say thanks for all the support this year Cutloose and Cosmic Disco have decided to join forces for a special one-off party. We’ve trawled the clubs/spaces/derelict warehouses of Manchester looking for the perfect setting to install the best possible sound-system we could lay our hands on, fly over our favourite DJ and round up 200 of our closest friends for one last blow-out before we start again in 2009.

Mark Seven will be making his Manchester debut for what is going to be a very special Xmas party on Saturday 27th December.

Mark is quickly gaining legendary status within the underground dance community. A renown record collector he’s also responsible for buying choice cuts for the fantastic Jus’ Wax records, where he regularly flies across the pond to pick up the finest collections from a number of legendary DJ’s & producers to bring back specifically your spotting perusal.

Mark is certainly no stranger to the underground music scene as his involvement goes as far back as the early 80’s, from promoting parties such as ‘Bizarre’ on the then fledgling Balearic scene, in addition to being a regular at the Rampling organised ‘Shoom’ events. In recent years, Mark has co-promoted ‘The Lodge’ and NY Social parties where he has introduced the likes of Prins Thomas & Phil Mison to the US scenes.

If this wasn’t enough, Mark is also responsible for the excellent Divine Edit 12″s on Creative Use (’Higher’ being a classic ‘end-of-nighter’) and with further edits and original productions scheduled for release in 2009. To say we are excited to bring him to Manchester is somewhat of an understatement.

We really hope as many of you can join us on the 27th for what is going to be a serious 6hrs of underground disco, late night basement action.

When, where and how much?

Saturday 27th November
10.00pm – 04:00am

Bookbinders
Minshull Street
Manchester
M4 6AY

£8 advance
£10 on the door

This is a free party (donations on the night welcome) and all you have to do is register your interest via our Mark Seven – EventWax page and follow the 3 easy steps to get your email confirmation.

This is a limited capacity event so once the tickets are gone; they really are gone! For this reason we strongly recommend you get a ticket/invite and arrive early to avoid disappointment.

The brainchild of veteran producers Morgan Geist and Darshan Jesrani, Metro Area was born out of the pair’s somewhat dichotomous love for both the old moods of R&B, disco and boogie and the more cutting-edge sound of innovative house and techno. Metro Area brings back the soulful experimentation of the early club classics – mixing live and electronic instruments. Simultaneously, the mood and minimalism of more recent dance music forms creep into the mix: Detroit’s cold futurism, Chicago’s abstract track-modes, and the warmth of New York and New Jersey’s deep house.

After over a year of late-night sessions in New Jersey and Manhattan – Metro Area burst onto the scene in 1999 with their self-titled debut 12″ featuring the cult smash “Atmosphrique.” With an angular bassline underpinned by a grungy 4/4 disco beat and the most distinctive claps this side of 1977, “Atmosphrique” sounds futuristic and retro at the same time, and spawned myriad heated debates concerning the record’s production date. Then came the simply amazing ‘Caught Up’ which left both DJs and dancers wanting more.

Currently staying busy with continued touring, solo remixes from Morgan and Darshan, new studios in Brooklyn, solo and side projects and the imminent release of a new Metro Area album and their new Fabric mix CD the music world can rest assured that Metro Area will continue to rock theories of time and space at Spektrum.

Massive to everyone who came to our party on Friday with Loud E and Beppe Loda. The feedback has been amazing with everybody that came down being treated to some of the finest disco and upfront electronic music that we have heard for a long time. Loud and Beppe will be back soon without a doubt!

We’re already excited about the next installment at Spektrum and making his Manchester debut is Sonar Kollektiv’s Roland Appel. If you heard Roland play then you’ll know he’s able to seamlessly combine the influences of Detroit Techno, Jazz, House and Disco keeping the vibe underground.

It’s all set to be one hell of a party with like minded individuals in what can only be described as an intimate 350 capacity club featuring one of the best light systems we have seen and a mighty Phazon/Funktion 1 sound system.

More about Roland Appel

Roland Appel is no newcomer to the world of music production. He started spinning records and producing music in the early 90s as a member of Fauna Flash with long-time partner and friend Christian Prommer. They made their name with 3 full-length albums, numerous 12″s, remixes and appearances on renowned labels such as Compost Records, G-Stone Recordings and !K7.

Last year Roland’s “Dark Soldier” made a huge splash within clubs all over the world – what started out as a secret hit at the 2007 Miami Winter Music Conference, found its way into the record bags of the likes Laurent Garnier, Tiefschwarz, DJ Hell and Gilles Peterson amongst others.

With such an extensive discography and such a high profile Roland has toured around the world and played in clubs such as Fabric in London, Cielo in New York or Yellow in Tokyo. He also had the opportunity to be on stage at the biggest music festivals such as Roskilde festival, Electric Elephant, Sonne Mond und Sterne, Sunflower, Big Chill Festival, 10 days off and Montreux Jazz Festival.

After an amazing party with Theo Parrish we’re already looking forward to the next one in October.

This time around we’ve assembled two of our favourite DJs and producers. When it comes to quality, hands in the air party disco and quirky energetic electronic music; we don’t think there’s many other DJ’s that deliver it sure fire more than BEPPE LODA and LOUD E.

Venue Information

Spektrum

Tel: 01612365444

Ticket Information

Beppe Loda

Beppe Loda is a music seeker, an eclectic music selector and a rare and obscure record collector. He’s a founder of the afro music movement as well as the forerunner of obscure disco, slow motion disco, Italosynth incorporating the industrial sound as well.

When he’s not DJing Beppe is a brilliant producer, a respected consultant and a refined record studio sound engineer. Beppe has remixed over 60 tracks of other artists and produced over 200 different dj sets with every kind of music.

Beppe often says “What pushes a true DJ to sacrificate himself while all the others enjoy the party?

It’s simple. The love of music. Welcome Beppe Loda.

Loud-E

Rard Laudy aka Loud-e began DJing in his late teens and was born in the Southern part of Holland near The Hague. He first started out playing acid and electro but true to form and very much in keeping with his chameleon like vibe he was always looking for something more along the funky and psychedelic sound – now you’re talking my language!

This subtle change in direction was brought about because he was sick of DJ’s in the same line up as him bringing the same records to the party. So he decided just to play the playable stuff he found at flea-markets, dusty secondhand stores and in the 1 euroboxes at bog fairs – sound!

Loud-e can be heard playing alongside Alexander Robotnick, Marco, Tako, Dave Clark, Suburban Night amongst others and has had recent releases of his own productions on Ambassadors Reception and Objects of Desire. Despite his unhealthy obsession with Dirk Kuyt we welcome him back to our Mancunian bosom for what is surely going to be a tip top night.

We’re all pretty fanatical about Theo Parrish (Sound signature, 3 Chairs) and have literally travelled across the world to hear him play. Over the last 12 months we’ve talked about bringing Theo to Manchester ourselves. There’s been some notable appearances and most recently at the re-opened Paradise Factory. How ever I’d have to say my favourite night in the company of Theo was in December last year at Plastic People.

Theo is at his best in a small intimate room with a chest punching sound system. Plastics was just that.

However over the last few months David Vincent has been finalising his plans to open a new venue called Spektrum. With a 350 capacity, mind bending lights coupled with a hybrid Funktion 1 & Phazon sound system it seemed appropriate to ask “please can we put on a party?”

From that moment we went all out to bring Theo to Manchester again. Within the week Theo had agreed and said he was more than up for coming back to Manchester. We asked him how long he wanted to play and being the amazing guy that he is said 5 hours.

We were hardly going to say no were we?

Ticket information

Advance e-tickets are £10. You can buy these online from Skiddle which we recommend as it saves time, no paper tickets that might get lost and you get a nice SMS to your phone confirming everything.
