Saturday 18th February 2012

The Roadhouse

11pm – Late

Tickets £5 adv. / £6 before 12 / £7 after.

Cutloose are back in action with DJ Nature flying in from NYC to start the year in fine fashion. A musical background that has unfolded over three decades like a rich tapestry, DJ Nature (aka Miles Mackenzie) was a founding member of Bristol’s infamous 80’s ‘Wild Bunch’ sound system, the same crew that spawned Massive Attack. He later migrated to NYC and took frequent trips to the underground house and disco clubs to hear legendary DJs such as Larry Levan and Tony Humphries. His love for that raw early house sound inspired his early releases under his ‘Natureboy’ moniker for Black Label NYC and Tomato Records UK.

With this heritage and his extensive disco, soul, funk and hip hop collection, it is no surprise Miles has an acute understanding of the underground sound that gives life to the dance floor. His recent releases, on cult NYC label, Golf Channel are collector’s items, but more importantly classic tracks, such as Destiny Reprise, have formed staple ingredients for a throbbing night. His remix work for respected Japanese label, Jazzy Sport, has been well received with releases such as the Suntoucher remixes vol 1 & 2 getting regular plays from respected jocks.

With a limited white label album to be released in the next couple of weeks, this is not a party to be missed – Roll up for the first party of 2012 - expect the best in soul, boogie and house with a Zanzibar vibe throughout!

Cutloose welcomes Brixton's finest, Felix Dickinson to start the festive season off on the right footing. Fools and friends, get down to the last regular party before February 2012!

Cutloose welcomes Brixton’s finest, Felix Dickinson to start the festive season off on the right footing. Felix has been DJing, producing music and throwing parties since the early 90s. From the formative gatherings of the Tonka crew to his sojourn in Brighton where he established the Slack night which was known for attracting people from far and wide, there has been an emphasis on ensuring a raucous atmosphere underpinned by quality music. This is sustained to the present day with the acclaimed ‘Bring It’ party, held in conjunction with the Idjut Boys at unexpected subterranean venues beneath railway bridges in SW9.

Due to his many monikers people often believe they’re not familiar with his sound yet upon closer inspection, most discerning DJs will realise they’ve got at least one of his tracks in their box. His first label – Ugly Music – released tracks from artists such as K-Alexi and DJ Harvey. Felix has produced records under a string of aliases including L.H.A.S Inc., Foolish and Sly, Das Etwas, The Mythical Beasts and Dedication whilst also performing mixing duties for Horse Meat Disco. His recent releases on L.H.A.S Inc. come recommended, and his Originals compilation for Claremont 56 deserves a special mention. As well as playing across the globe, Foolish Felix is a top boy and he now brings it to Manchester for our December party.

Fools and friends, get down to the last regular party before February 2012!

Jazzie’s rich musical heritage can be traced back to the formidable Soul II Soul soundsystem of the early 80s, which played a key role in the early London warehouse party scene and eventually transpired to become what is still the UK’s most sensational soul group. Soul II Soul’s responsibility for the killer classics ‘Keep On Moving’ and ‘Back To Life’ will keep them infinitely etched in dance music history, as Jazzie’s grooves saw them effortlessly cross musical scenes and cultural boundaries.

The first sound man to be honoured by Her Majesty the Queen, from the renowned nights at the Africa Centre where things really kicked off, to widespread triumph with his Soul II Soul productions, Jazzie B gets props for being at the foundation of UK dance music back when.

Continuing work with his label Soul II Soul Recordings, an annual music festival in Antigua and regular BBC radio shows, Jazzie keeps thing relevant. Long-time inspiration to all those of a soulful persuasion – expect a melodious night of jazz, funk, house, hip hop, soul and boogie at Cutloose. This promises to be a special party, get ready to make some space yeah!

All motherf-ckers welcome!

This is one party we have been conjuring up for some time and therefore we have switched the night of our June party to a Saturday as a one-off special to make this night happen. We are delighted to welcome Sadar Bahar for his first appearance in Manchester and without being cliché over the years after speaking to our guests his name has regularly cropped up in terms of an individual who is a great selector and collector of records and harks back to a time when these skills above all else were valued in a DJ.

Highly recommended by Theo Parrish and other respected faces, Sadar has built a solid reputation with crate diggers around the world thanks to his penchant for discovering lost hits and rare grooves; good vibe curiosities that percolate his incredible mixes of funk, jazz and soul infused disco and house music.

Sadar cut his teeth during Chicago’s early house music era; the notable dedication to his craft garnered credit from his peers to the extent that, upon their retirement, some DJs have handed him entire record collections, knowing he would do them justice – “I’m always looking for something deeper that no one else is playing, I have about 14,000 records in all” Sadar explains; “I probably have one of the largest Fela collections on wax, too”. Although house music provides the backbone to his sets, you’re unlikely to hear popular, track-laden songs or programmed disco – Sadar favours live instrumentation and good vocals meaning partygoers are likely to be hit upon by a heady fusion of soul, funk, jazz and disco.

All this bodes well for our June Saturday special shindig where Cutloose regulars, audiophiles and aficionados alike will experience an evening of ecstatic freedom through movement and sensational sounds.

Our first ever contribution from Portugal comes from producer/DJ Tiago whose solo catalogue spans over releases on Ene Japan, DFA, Italians Do It Better and Leng. Late last year he issued a baked 12″ of mid-tempo grooves on ESP Institute under the alias Sea, Power & Change which quickly became a playing favourite. Our excitement was further satisfied with Golf Channel’s Gala Drop disc, featuring Tiago making a racket behind the drum kit in this live psych ensemble. Both of these are essential releases and now available in Melbourne at Someday. No stranger to the 1200s, Tiago has also been the resident of Lux, a club in his hometown of Lisbon, for 12 years running. With that much practice it’s no surprise that tonight’s guest mix is a total burner!
