Nancy Martin – Can’t Believe

No Comments 11 March 2010

At the start of 2010 we had opportunity of providing the support to a Red Bull Music Academy event staged at the Deaf Institute in Manchester. Also featured on the bill were A Guy Called Gerald and Marshall Jefferson.

The three of us weren’t sure what to expect not having seen or heard either of them for a long time. My most recent memory being when Marshall Jefferson arrived to play Casa Musica in May 2005 with a box of dusty and badly scratched records released on the re-issue label from around that time called S12. Don’t get me wrong here, I’m not knocking Marshall or the label, the guy is a legend in his own right. Though agreeing to play a night and showcase all the records he bought, got involved in and having experienced Ron Hardy first hand didn’t really warrant playing a version of Black Box – Ride on Time that jumped around more than when Loletta Holloway realised someone was dining out on her vocal talent with a UK chart number one.

With that in mind we approached the party cautiously and packed several copies of Deep Heat 9 to double up with should the need arise to break out the ‘classics’. First our play time was cut short. Now we’re way beyond getting irate about that, it was more about how we were hustled off the turntables by Marshall himself. Only after telling us he was remixing House Music Anthem. Again.

We made way for Marshall and his pocket sized CD wallet and were animated at the lack of a box full of dusty S12 records. He brought the Cutloose selections to a stand still and soaked up the cheers and applaud.

His first record was an absolute beauty and for a moment we believed we were in for a real insight to the records that had inspired Marshall. As the night went on the record selection seemed to decline and there’s only so much DJM800 filter I can handle in one sitting. Sure this is all subjective and he played to a packed floor who all seemed to appreciate Marshall’s effort. That said I couldn’t help feeling like I’d be transported back to Warrington when bouncers wore Barry McGuigan style suits and you still had to wear shoes to get in clubs. Then I remembered Marshall talking on the Pump Up The Volume documentary and his first experience of the Music Box. Coincidence?

Here’s Marshall’s first record and I only wish he’d played more of the same. Enjoy.

Cutloose End of Year Review | 2009

No Comments 03 January 2010

2009 has been a fantastic year at the Roadhouse where we’ve staged and debuted our favourite DJs from around the world. We made the move to our favourite Mancunian basement in February after taking January out to plan what to do with the following 11 months. The opening night was rammed to the rafters and the atomsphere electric highlighting we’d made the right choice in venue and setting the benchmark for all future parties. From there on in we raised the bar month by month showcasing fine musical soundtracks provided by the DJs below.

  • 20TH FEB – SOUNDSTREAM
  • 20TH MAR – MOTOR CITY DRUM ENSEMBLE
  • 17TH APR – MARK E
  • 15TH MAY – MARK SEVEN
  • 19TH JUN – CUTLOOSE & COSMIC DISCO PRESENT FELIX DICKINSON
  • 17TH JUL – THEO PARRISH
  • 21ST AUG – SOFT ROCKS
  • 18TH SEP – 1ST BIRTHDAY WITH FIRECRACKER RECORDINGS & LINKWOOD FAMILY
  • 16TH OCT – BRENNAN GREEN
  • 20TH NOV – GERD JANSON
  • 18TH DEC – MARK E

In September we celebrated our 1st Birthday party with the lads from Firecracker Recordings, at the time it really didn’t feel like 12 months has passed since we staged our first party in September 2008 with Theo Parrish.

Along the way we’ve made some best friends who I’m sure will be returning in the near future to detonate the basement of the Roadhouse once more. It’s hard to pick a stand out party from 2009 as they’ve all been amazing for so many different reasons. Each guest has brought something different to the party and for 4 hours created an electric atomsphere, sharing their own take on House music.

In addition to our own parties we’ve helped provide support on many other musical occassions in and around the city and further afield, such as Wes and Paul supporting Mark Seven’s party in Sweden earlier in the year. Just a few days ago we took our record bags down to Legends where the Electric Chair staged their End of Year Riot – we had a cracking night and it was good to be part of something that has been a musical institution for the last decade and beyond.

We’re already looking forward to 2010 with our first three guests of the year all ready to go. February will be our first party after the January break. They go like this :

  • 20TH FEB – THEO PARRISH
  • 20TH MARCH – DJ SPUN
  • 17TH APRIL – GERRY ROONEY

Full party information will be availble on cutlooseclub.com over the next few weeks though you can buy tickets for Theo Parrish from our ticket page located at http://www.cutlooseclub.com/tickets – we checked the ticket scenario this morning and we’ve already hit the half way mark. The Roadhouse has capacity for 250 cats for this party so don’t sleep if you’re planning on coming. No ticket really does mean no entry and our last party sold out with weeks to go. Tell all your friends!

Over the next few weeks We’ll be providing a comprehensive run down of some of the music that has made the Cutloose parties special. It’s been hard selecting stand out tracks from times gone by to the swift releases we’ve seen from some our fave producers this year.

Thank you to everyone who has come and partied, supported, pulled the camo net down and shook the basement at Cutloose during 2009, we really do appreciate it and hope to see you down the front in 2010!

All the best for the New Year.

Chart : Paul – August 2009

No Comments 05 August 2009

The records in this chart transcend a number of genres which for me is what playing music is all about. Special mention to our pal Mark Seven with his new release Travelogue and those lucky enough to get his 3 hour mix CD when he played at Horse Meat Disco are in for a treat! SmAsH!

Theo Parrish – Heal Yourself and Move [Peacefrog Records]

No Comments 23 January 2009

Theodore Parrish needs no introduction and indubitably sits firmly as my all time most admired DJ and Producer. Heal Yourself And Move is one of the nine belters taken from Theo’s first album ironically titled First Floor, released back in October 1998. The opening synth soaked vibes descend quickly into a deep, sublime, Detroit-infused 11 minute epic. A typical Theo Parrish slow burner that makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up whenever I hear it, get this thumping out of a big system and you can’t help but get involved.

When Theo played for us back in September we were talking about this record and he was saying it was one of his favourite tracks from over the years. He also went on to say that it was the first record where he recorded the vocals as himself, that’s right; those sultry deep spoken words are actually the main man Parrish on the mic!!

If you don’t already own this album, buy it now and listen to it in full CD Stereo quality for full effect. Turn it up.
