Rollerball enigma and silhouetted man-on-the-mic Kenny Dixon Jr. aka Moodymann is one of the most enigmatic and charismatic figures that house music ever bred. Despite his refusal to give interviews and play the press-and-promo game, Kenny’s voice has been clearly amongst the loudest, when it comes to preserving the rich heritage of Afro-American music, while fighting the music industry powers that be. Blessed with an immaculate way of sampling, he takes stems from blues and soul, and respectfully takes them onto the next level – just check his Tribute (To The Soul We Lost) ode to Marvin Gaye for proof. From his dark and dusty deep house tunes on Peacefrog, Planet E and his own KDJ label, to his more recent outings on the R&B-drenched Mahogani Music imprint as well as his 2009 sure-fire anthem Freaky MF, Moodymann’s fingerprint has stayed unmistakable. Even a so-called techno tune like Dem Young Sconies sounds like nothing and nobody else on this planet. You can’t kick this feeling when it hits!

The Spirit’s in It is a 1981 album released by singer Patti LaBelle. The album was her first release off Philadelphia International Records after coming off a seven-year contract with Epic Records and four studio albums. The Gamble and Womack produced title track is an absolute belter. Spun proclaimed this was his favourite all time disco record and aptly closed the party with it on Friday.

Here’s a touch of Friday when everyone was on the floor and showed their appreciation for a musically tip top night.

At the start of 2010 we had opportunity of providing the support to a Red Bull Music Academy event staged at the Deaf Institute in Manchester. Also featured on the bill were A Guy Called Gerald and Marshall Jefferson.

The three of us weren’t sure what to expect not having seen or heard either of them for a long time. My most recent memory being when Marshall Jefferson arrived to play Casa Musica in May 2005 with a box of dusty and badly scratched records released on the re-issue label from around that time called S12. Don’t get me wrong here, I’m not knocking Marshall or the label, the guy is a legend in his own right. Though agreeing to play a night and showcase all the records he bought, got involved in and having experienced Ron Hardy first hand didn’t really warrant playing a version of Black Box – Ride on Time that jumped around more than when Loletta Holloway realised someone was dining out on her vocal talent with a UK chart number one.

With that in mind we approached the party cautiously and packed several copies of Deep Heat 9 to double up with should the need arise to break out the ‘classics’. First our play time was cut short. Now we’re way beyond getting irate about that, it was more about how we were hustled off the turntables by Marshall himself. Only after telling us he was remixing House Music Anthem. Again.

We made way for Marshall and his pocket sized CD wallet and were animated at the lack of a box full of dusty S12 records. He brought the Cutloose selections to a stand still and soaked up the cheers and applaud.

His first record was an absolute beauty and for a moment we believed we were in for a real insight to the records that had inspired Marshall. As the night went on the record selection seemed to decline and there’s only so much DJM800 filter I can handle in one sitting. Sure this is all subjective and he played to a packed floor who all seemed to appreciate Marshall’s effort. That said I couldn’t help feeling like I’d be transported back to Warrington when bouncers wore Barry McGuigan style suits and you still had to wear shoes to get in clubs. Then I remembered Marshall talking on the Pump Up The Volume documentary and his first experience of the Music Box. Coincidence?

Here’s Marshall’s first record and I only wish he’d played more of the same. Enjoy.

Cutloose is excited to announce that Rong’s head honcho DJ Spun will reign over the decks for our March party.

Spun has had an embryonic influence on underground US music scene from genre to genre, coast to coast. He evolved from playing in San Francisco bands in the early 80s, sharing the stage with punk luminaries including the Dead Kennedys, to help forge the fusion of house, techno, rare groove and funky breaks that came to be known as “the West Coast sound”. In 2003, he founded genre-blending, leftfield disco label Rong Music, which has recently collaborated with DFA on a dual imprint label and also emanated offshoot labels, Tu Rong and Promo Only, which has made an indelible contribution to the current disco edit craze.

Currently residing in New York, Spun is the curator of P.S.1/MoMA’s monumental Warm Up Music Series, exposing an average of 4000 New York cats to the best in experimental music and live DJs, as well as racking up frequent flyer miles playing at respected parties from Berlin to Toyko to Sydney with the likes of Rub n Tug, the Idjut Boys and DJ Harvey. A renowned producer of disco and deep house cuts, we anticipate a party that will exude a host of classic and future gems from one of NYC’s deepest and most cultivated crates.

2009 has been a fantastic year at the Roadhouse where we’ve staged and debuted our favourite DJs from around the world. We made the move to our favourite Mancunian basement in February after taking January out to plan what to do with the following 11 months. The opening night was rammed to the rafters and the atomsphere electric highlighting we’d made the right choice in venue and setting the benchmark for all future parties. From there on in we raised the bar month by month showcasing fine musical soundtracks provided by the DJs below.

20TH FEB – SOUNDSTREAM

20TH MAR – MOTOR CITY DRUM ENSEMBLE

17TH APR – MARK E

15TH MAY – MARK SEVEN

19TH JUN – CUTLOOSE & COSMIC DISCO PRESENT FELIX DICKINSON

17TH JUL – THEO PARRISH

21ST AUG – SOFT ROCKS

18TH SEP – 1ST BIRTHDAY WITH FIRECRACKER RECORDINGS & LINKWOOD FAMILY

16TH OCT – BRENNAN GREEN

20TH NOV – GERD JANSON

18TH DEC – MARK E

In September we celebrated our 1st Birthday party with the lads from Firecracker Recordings, at the time it really didn’t feel like 12 months has passed since we staged our first party in September 2008 with Theo Parrish.

Along the way we’ve made some best friends who I’m sure will be returning in the near future to detonate the basement of the Roadhouse once more. It’s hard to pick a stand out party from 2009 as they’ve all been amazing for so many different reasons. Each guest has brought something different to the party and for 4 hours created an electric atomsphere, sharing their own take on House music.

In addition to our own parties we’ve helped provide support on many other musical occassions in and around the city and further afield, such as Wes and Paul supporting Mark Seven’s party in Sweden earlier in the year. Just a few days ago we took our record bags down to Legends where the Electric Chair staged their End of Year Riot – we had a cracking night and it was good to be part of something that has been a musical institution for the last decade and beyond.

We’re already looking forward to 2010 with our first three guests of the year all ready to go. February will be our first party after the January break. They go like this :

20TH FEB – THEO PARRISH

20TH MARCH – DJ SPUN

17TH APRIL – GERRY ROONEY

Full party information will be availble on cutlooseclub.com over the next few weeks though you can buy tickets for Theo Parrish from our ticket page located at http://www.cutlooseclub.com/tickets – we checked the ticket scenario this morning and we’ve already hit the half way mark. The Roadhouse has capacity for 250 cats for this party so don’t sleep if you’re planning on coming. No ticket really does mean no entry and our last party sold out with weeks to go. Tell all your friends!

Over the next few weeks We’ll be providing a comprehensive run down of some of the music that has made the Cutloose parties special. It’s been hard selecting stand out tracks from times gone by to the swift releases we’ve seen from some our fave producers this year.

Thank you to everyone who has come and partied, supported, pulled the camo net down and shook the basement at Cutloose during 2009, we really do appreciate it and hope to see you down the front in 2010!

All the best for the New Year.

X

The inspiration for the selections stem from lazy Sunday afternoons listening to my dad play his weekend purchases. He was a regular at most of the North West and beyond Northern Soul haunts through out the 70s. During that time he amassed a collection of records which he eventually sold to a local DJ in the mid 1980s. Some of the first sevens I bought were from the record fair that used to frequent the Parr Hall in Warrington along with finds on Warrington market. In the early 90s I helped out at Hottwaxx Records in Warrington where purveyors Barry May and Kevin Edwards
educated me by sharing records that at the time I hoped to own one day! That said my knowledge is limited and these days I spend more time and money looking for disco records in dusty basements or charidee shops. This mix showcases some of my favourites that I’ve bought over the years.

Tears for Fears was formed in the early 1980s by Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith who’ve been successful selling more than 22 million albums worldwide with well known songs such as “Sowing the Seeds of Love”, “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” and “Mad World”.

During the 1980s they were heavily inflluenced by artists such as Talking Heads, Peter Gabriel and Brian Eno. How ever in 1991 the band broke up and both embarked on solo careers. The year before they released the single “Advice for the young at heart” featuring a b-side “Johnny Panic and the Bible of Dreams” taking it’s title from a collection of short stories by deceased poet and writer Sylvia Plath.

The song sounds very different to the previous material released and seemed quite fitting with a style of music that was popular early doors in clubs across the country at the time. The slow burning break-beat coupled with haunting strings, operatic vocals and colourful keys are elements that combine into this one sound making it their most under-rated release waiting to be discovered.

In 1991 Fluke remixed the song and released it as a single where it become a number-one hit in the UK Dance Chart. It reached number 70 on the UK singles chart.

Here’s the original b-side as it was intended to be heard. Enjoy.

Cutloose kick off 2010 with a bang, welcoming Theo Parrish to sculpt the sounds in his distinct maverick style for our opening party of the year. Cutloose fervently advocate Theo’s neat articulation of his core musical philosophy -

Love of the music should be the driving force of any producer, performer or DJ.

Interspersing the disco-based pulse of Chicago house, the automotive electronica of Detroit techno, with more than a nod to the soul and jazz of an esteemed lineage in black music that runs directly from Sun Ra to Sound Signature, Theo’s sets compel a rhythmic assault on your musical consciousness for which the Roadhouse basement will be the perfect setting. Theo’s non-conformist values and passion, entrenched in his own productions and label, will ensure that this will be one incredible Cutloose party. A word of warning – the last time Theo played Cutloose, tickets sold out weeks in advance – don’t sleep on this!

Fred Wesley is an American jazz and funk trombonist, best known for his work with James Brown in the 1960s and 1970s. As a child he took piano and later trumpet lessons, and at around the age of 12 his father brought a trombone home, whereupon he switched to trombone.

During the 1960s and 1970s he was a pivotal member of James Brown’s bands, playing on many hit recordings. His slippery riffs and pungent, precise solos, complementing those of saxophonist Maceo Parker, gave Brown’s R&B, soul, and funk tunes their instrumental punch.

Wesley’s 35-year career includes playing with and arranging for a wide variety of other artist such as Ray Charles, Lionel Hampton, Randy Crawford, Vanessa Williams, The SOS Band, Cameo, Van Morrison, Socalled and rappers De La Soul, to name a few. Many other artists have sampled his work.

We celebrating turning 1 in September with Firecracker Recordings and Linkwood Family. The guys from the electronic music magazine Random Circuits came down to see what all the fuss was about. Read on.

Manchester over the past year has seen a flurry of club nights come and go. Those that never made it did so with good reason; lack of foresight, vision, creativity and in some cases too much arrogance. Of course I wouldn’t do any better. If truth be told a night run be me would be a disaster of mass proportions, doomed to a catastrophic end that would see me collapse both mentally and financially. It takes a touch of magical wizardry to produce a successful and unique night. Those Manchester nights that have done just that are easily recognisable from their marketing, let alone the parties themselves. Hand crafted simplistic posters and flyers, which advertise their artists and their associated record labels as much as they do their own event.

Cutloose is unmistakeably one such night. A fresh faced one year old, brought into the world by well educated and wise hands. Sound Stream, Theo Parrish, Mark E, Mark Seven, Motor City Drum Ensemble and most recently a trio of artists from the Firecracker Recordings and Linkwood Family (Linkwood, Fudge Fingas and House of Traps) having all played their part. The seemingly hand picked crowd is instrumental too. Rioting with due cause on a monthly rota, they tear down decorations, rip up the floors and pillage the cider stocks from behind the bar with smiles stretched wildly across their faces.

The party started off life at Spektrum but quickly moved (for one night only) to Bookbinders before settling at the Roadhouse, where fortunately it has stayed ever since. Often referred to as the Basement, the venue drops down under a building and opens up into a small square red lit room. The club normally plays host to bands and the likes and therefore is littered with oversized speakers. A line of them protect the decks from any would be stumbler, whilst an untold number of high powered cones hang from various heights around the room. Once wired into to a high powered mixer of some kind, the sound thunders.

It was 11:30 when I arrived, the crowd was a little light but like every other month the numbers rose exponentially over the next hour, by 00:30am the dance floor was fat with Cutloose regulars perpetuating the atmosphere into a freakish momentum. A crowd that doesn’t cry out every time the bass gets cut is no crowd at all in my opinion. I want to literally see people’s thoraxes exploding out of their mouths, which is rather lucky considering the sheer volume that rattles out of the average Cutloose visitor, who seems to have vocal power of a banshee. An intoxicating breed and no mistaking.

This uncontrollable raving horde revels in nights like this one, where the guests take charge for the whole evening, gifting everyone with a fascinating insight into what the label and its key figures are all about. I’ve seen a few examples of this done lately and it’s safe to say that I like it. I often walk away astounded by the sheer diversity of an imprints output and influences. Whilst the Firecracker and Linkwood trio played a lot of tracks reminiscent of the Prime Numbers sound early on, they also drifted into the kind of deep house and techno you’d expect to pick up on labels like Wax and Mojuba. Each of the 3 DJs showcased their own unique catalogue and as they swapped places behind the decks the mood would shift ever so slightly into a different direction but never dropping in pace.

3am closing times are a cruel thing for any human being to bear. Although perhaps the play their part; the vindictive swines, leaving those that remain standing with an unquenchable thirst for more. The end of a Cutloose night is a sad moment that can only be recompensed by a head first plunge into Sunday morning front room fun times where you’re left clucking frantically for next month’s party.

Theo Parrish makes his return in February next year; though back in July he played for us at our favourite basement The Roadhouse. We’ve printed the Resident Advisor review in full below or you can go read on their website.

It was difficult to think of a starting point for this review. Concentrating on anything of late has been rather trying. I haven’t been able to shake the crazed look that was in Theo Parrish’s eyes. I can still picture him marching behind the decks; like a toy soldier possessed by a groove. My memory of the night is a blur, due in part to my own wretched behaviour. The cheeky devastator I had done hit me like a double-decker bus as I arrived outside the Roadhouse. I felt my eyes sucking themselves into my skull and my brain jolting itself awake.

An apt way to be too, I felt, for a night of such occasion. Cutloose is always a ferociously lively affair, but this was set to be a big one. It sold out weeks ago and I’ve no doubt that both my friends and colleagues would have happily raped me of my ticket and left me bleeding in the gutter had the opportunity arose. If they’d walked past on the night, then God only knows what they would have unleashed had they seen how wide the smokers outside were smiling and sampled—albeit briefly—the atmosphere escaping from the front doors.

Casting my mind back 18 months ago, I remember Theo Parrish at the Paradise Factory. The main room that night sucked up all of Theo’s magic and tossed it to one side like a cheap date. It was a disappointment of massive proportions. However, in a small club like the Roadhouse, with five hours to play with, I knew Parrish would come alive. More than alive, I knew the crazy bastard would rock a place like the Roadhouse to its very foundations. And, as always, I was right.

One friend turned to me at one point and said to “I just don’t know what he’s going to play next.” Neither did I. Neither did anyone. Things started out heavily jazz and soul influenced. The crowd was on the brink of rioting, arms in the air and screaming. Words alone can’t do the atmosphere justice. Then at one point an acid track was thundered out of a pitched back cool house number and sweet mother of God, the place went berserk. He then twisted it back to a slow ’80s electro number before taking it back to feverish, get up and strut, house music. This is how the night went on. A voyage of discovery…of sorts. Yet everything sounded in place; the constantly changing momentum acted as a driving force and each new track an injection of new found madness on the dance floor.

Without doubt, in the right club—with a deafening sound system to wire his DJR400 mixer up to—Theo Parrish is unstoppable. A rare treat for those that think they’ve seen everything. A Tenaglia for the modern day underground house and techno world perhaps? More likely though; history will paint—much like the images in my head—a truly unique picture.

After a cracker of a Birthday party we’re already getting set for our October soiree down at the Roadhouse. This month we welcome Brooklyn’s finest in the guise of Brennan Green.

DJ and producer Brennan Green is associated with a number of current trends in dance music – house, disco, nu-disco, leftfield, cosmic, post punk, electrofunk etc.– but no fashion or sub-sub-genre adequately describes Green’s trademark sound.

His productions on independent dance labels such as Modal, Daniel Wang’s Balihu and his own label, Chinatown, have an organic feel that is rare in modern dance music. Green’s vinyl-only releases combine both acoustic and electronic instrumentation to unearth irresistible grooves, atypical rhythms and hypnotic basslines. As a remixer Brennan has also found a voice all his own with popular remixes for Liquid Liquid, Lindstrom and DFA.

Brennan’s genre-bending DJ-sets are sure to rock any dancefloor taking a crowd through sounds that span disco, house, techno, dub and rock. His New York parties Pop Your Funk (Along side Roy Dank of Wurst Music Co. APT, 01-04) and Junky Blues (Flamingo, 99-01) were instrumental in pioneering the current underground disco sound and since then he has toured extensively through Japan, Australia, Europe, North/South America playing at events as diverse as NewYork’s P.S.1, London’s Fabric, Tokyo’s Yellow, Sydney’s Madracket and many of the world’s best underground parties. He’s Currently holding down monthly residencies at NYC’s east village outpost Nublu and Chinatown’s aptly named BEast.

Forthcoming are several releases on Chinatown including a collaboration with Arthur Russell.

We always try and like to write what we know about the records and the artists we feature here. Though I don’t think I could highlight how good Gemini aka Spencer Kincey more than what’s already been produced over at Discogs.

One of the most forward-looking producers in the continuing Chicago renaissance of the 1990s, Gemini first came to the world’s attention through his recordings for cult Chicago labels Cajual / Relief.

He began recording early in the decade, and gained fame for the minimalist flavour of Cajual twelves like ‘Tangled Thoughts’ and ‘Duality’. Gemini debuted his album work in late 1997 with his stunning ‘In and Out of the Fog and Lights’ LP for Peacefrog, which followed ‘Hibernation’ and ‘North Star’ EP’s.

Being a highly sought after DJ in both America and Europe as well as an in demand producer / remix, Spencer Kincey aka Gemini is one of the most important jewels in the Chicago house crown.

Enjoy this classic Gemini jam. One of my fave Cajual releases of all time.

Master C & J were made up of members Carl Bias, Edward “Get Down” Crosby and Jessie Jones.
‘Face it’ is a deep cut with fine drums and the amazing Liz Torres providing the recurrent vocals that repeat in the background all accompanied that familiar chi-town synth sound. A perfect combination for a house record.

It sounds timeless and certainly due some air time at Cutloose in the future.

Enjoy.

The term “Nacht und Nebel” derives from the policy Hitler issued in 1941, where he allowed prisoners from the resistance in occupied territory to “vanish without a trace, and no information was given as to their whereabouts or their fate.”

Suspected underground agents and others would vanish therefore into the “night and fog”.

Dark name for a band and that’s todays history lesson over.

The band of the same name were a Belgian synth-pop/electro/new wave band of the 1980s founded by Patrick Nebel along with members Albano Bentano and Fil Yzerdraad.

In 1984 they had success with “Beats of Love” though after releasing two more albums they never achieved quite the same success. In 1986 founding member Patrick died from a fatal heart disease which brought the end of the group.

It’s a slow burner with awesome percussion and a haunting vocal. Extended remix duties taken care of by John Tilly.

Italians do it better? Some might say. In Alto Mare is one of those records that defines good pop music. Loredana Berte is an Italian singer who had great success through the 70s and 80s experimenting with different genres from rock to reggae and from funk to pop. She continued to produce music through out the 90s and into the new decade although I don’t think nothing has topped the 1980 pop smash from the album entitled ‘Loredanberte’.

Other out standing releases are ‘E L Luna Busso‘ where you get to hear the reggae experimentation to ‘Movie‘ which just bumps with quality funk and trumpet stabs showcasing a rap performed by Loredana herself.

Enjoy.

Soft Rocks are four-piece Brighton collective who have set the music and club-land scenes ablaze with their edits, productions and DJ sets. As well as producing and DJing, they’re heavy-duty record collectors who have gained a reputation for discovering many lost classics. Their sets embrace a variety of styles from rock, house, Afro, boogie, disco, cosmic, Balearic, and Italo – if it’s heavyweight music you want– Soft Rocks are out their on their own.

2008 was a great year and saw releases on Eskimo, Lo Recordings, and their own label Soft Rocks Recordings– with a fantastic remix for the mighty MGMT, CRUE-L in Japan, and Black Pepper in Italy. Gigs in 2008 included Milan Fashion Week, Isle Of Wight Festival, Go!Zilla, Love To Fly, ASBO, Bloom Festival, Star of Bethnal Green, The Big Chill, Bestival, Connect Festival, Asylum (Leeds), The End, amongst many others.

In 2008, Soft Rocks appeared in the June and December issues of ID Magazine and the October Issue of Vogue, with coverage in Metro too, as they are being touted as leaders of the leftfield Disco scene– 2009 has seen the boys go from strength to strength.

Here’s the lastest review from the dance and electronic music magazine; Resident Advisor. As usual you can stick around and digest here or head over to Resident Advisor website.

Chequered shirts, for me, are the primary colours of two distinct groups of people; one wields an axe, whilst the other gets fired up on booze and turns Manchester’s red lit Roadhouse basement into an intoxicating monthly romp. DJs at this romp are varied and span the eclectic funk, soul and disco side of house. Mark E, Motor City Drum Ensemble, Theo Parrish—who’s set to return in July—and Sound Stream have all played previously. The crowd at its centre is a feverish group that sets an unmistakeably infectious mood about the night they call Cutloose.

I’ve made attempts to get down early, which have crumbled into pre-night out red wine drinking frenzies. I told myself that this time was going to be different, I was going to concur the bottle and witness more of the resident’s warm-up. A minor alcoholic infraction and cash point trip set me back slightly but still I managed to fall in by 11:30. A rewarding effort it was too: I caught an hour of Mark and Wes, two of the night’s three promoters and residents. I still held a straight eye at this point and remember Wes tightly mixing rolling house classics, familiar to the any old club head. Mark came on about 30 minutes later, adding a disco edge to the four-four proceedings. This expectedly caused a rise in what was already high numbers on the dance floor. Cutloose fever was in full swing by midnight and the vibe reminiscent of the first time I went to the night some months ago when Sound Stream put a memorable show.

I managed to acclimatise myself to the deafening volumes of the Roadhouse sound system earlier and more sober than usual. At previous events the high notes, at times, have been too much for me to bear. This time—reduced to a more acceptable level—they were palatable and easier to digest.

Mark Seven, the headline for the night—a man I know little of—was on by 1 AM.
He started with a bleary look in his eye and a distinctly house sound. Early on he dropped “Reach for Me” by Funky Green Dogs, which almost left my voice spent. Things got a little crazy amongst the dancing public at this point and as he took a disco swerve it was all out bloodshed. Singing, strutting and quick-toed carnage were the order of the day. The last 45 minutes had a more ’80s feel about it, which may not be to everyone’s taste, but the way he got to it had me sold. There was plenty of well-known ’70s numbers thrown in too but I’m at a lost as to what they were.

This was possibly my favourite Cutloose so far but I’m not quite sure why. Looking back the music was good—at times a little outside of what I would normally like—but despite this I was well involved. The crowd, I feel, was the main reason I came away grinning like a 14th century gay man. There wasn’t a pretentious head in the room and without exception everyone was in a good time mood.

After an incredible party with Mark E who well and truly smashed the Roadhouse, here’s what Resident Advisor had to say about it.

After being introduced to the Cutloose way of life just 3 months ago I haven’t looked back. Their flyers alone speak volumes to me, listing only the headline act—for which there is only ever one—against the artist’s associated artwork. The residents, who I presume play a big hand in running the night, take a humble backseat and are only mentioned on the website. Like so many great parties, Cutloose seem to focus almost solely on the travelling artist and creating a great vibe for them.

It’s because of this—and memories of events past—that I was willingly driven from my Friday night slumber and out into the Manchester dark. Familiar house sounds were rolling out from the Roadhouse speakers when I arrived; the crowd was relatively small at the time with a few familiar faces holding fast at the bar. I turned round after procuring some drinks to a changed venue as a gaggle of people were clambering through the front door. The club filled instantly and the atmosphere suddenly leapt from that of a subdued gathering of friendly fellows to something more akin to a Skins party montage.

Residents Mark and Wes looked like they were having the time of their life at this point, twiddling knobs and smiling widely. I only really caught Wes’ warm-up, which was ripe with groove drunk basslines that were neatly pieced together. I wish I’d got down earlier so I could have heard more from the local contingency but sadly the financial implications of being in such close proximity to a bar so early were too great.

Mark E came on about 40 minutes after I arrived and started with a soul-influenced little number that sounded like it had come straight out of New Orleans. I’d read online that his sets are hypnotic, which in some respects I agree with although I’m not sure it’s a word I would have used. He was most definitely eclectic; playing all manner of house music in what was a technically immaculate display. I was gripped by the first half-hour, wavered slightly during the next due to my own narrow minded tastes but was then at the front, elbows waving for his last hour. This was due to the slightly housier sound from about 2 AM onwards, which was still reminiscent of the classic soul and R&B vibe from earlier.

Manchester has seen some dark times over the past two years for club nights but with help from nights like Cutloose the city is become a feverishly fun place to be at the weekend, with guaranteed good times to be had. They have Mark Seven’s coming up next month, Theo Parrish in July and a disco extravaganza in between and I’ve no doubt that I’ll be at all of them.

Mike Mareen was born and raised in Berlin where before moving to New York he was a drummer and later singer in the group Cemetery Institution.

With a change of career as a merchant sailor Mike moved to New York where he performed with several American groups. He returned to Germany and became involved in producing Italo Disco where he achieved his biggest success with the Italo hit “Love Spy” in 1986. Mike also released his first album titled “Dance Control” around that time featuring the track here “Dancing in the Dark”

Through out the 80s Mike had more success with his Italo sound as well as writing for other artists. He released further albums on the well known German label ZYX records. A lot of those productions and releases were re-issued through the 90s.

Dancing in the Dark is probably my favourite release by Mike Maureen. Probably not the most perfect Italo record though those synths and drums just bump. It’s one of those tracks I always think mid set in recent times “fack I wish I’d brought that with me”. Maybe next time.

Let’s go dancing. In the dark.

It’s Wednesday and there’s a whole heap of work to complete before the days out. I’ve exhausted all the mixes on my iPod and hit Youtube for a nostalgic house music work out.

Everyone knows Todd Terry and many of his different production guises. Today’s Youtube video comes courtesy of his Gypsymen alias.

I think it’s safe to say he knew how to put a record together based on disco loops and samples. The rawness of this release is one of the best. Those kicks, hooks, stabs and loops on a nice sounding system do the trick every time and you can’t help but lose yourself in the groove. Especially at 2:47 and that drop.

It’s been re-issued on green vinyl with another mighty Gypsymen release “Stoppin Us”. Worth picking up the double pack for the all the cuts.

I remember the first time I heard this record in Legends in the Summer of 92. Wow.

Those beats just hooked me in along with that Todd Terry sounding groove. Then the siren. You can’t beat a good siren and they all know how much we love them at Block E in dusty downtown Ancoats.

It’s a pretty rare record apparently [one on discogs for £60] and it remained unknown and illusive for a long time following it’s release. I collected volumes 2, 3 and 4 and I believe there is a 5 though I’ve never seen or heard of one.

It was only in the last few years I found out via Mike Woods that it’s actually an edit of a track by Safire. Remember her? Needless to say we both went out and bought a copy.

The track was called Taste the Bass with David Morales on the mix. It’s still a great record though since getting a copy I’ve thought about re doing the Deep Beats thing. That said it’s so good in it’s own right I doubt I’d get close.

Enjoy.

Mike Woods played me All Dis Music years ago and actually went to re-record it along with Ste Conry from Ten Lovers Music. They re-recorded the vocal too with a friend of Stes. I’m not sure what happened commercially though I do remember playing it out several times. Romance got in touch via my website at the time and expressed an interest in listening to the new version. Again I’m not sure what else happened after that after exchanging details as the communication dried up. I noticed on the Youtube comments for the video that Romance himself has posted mentioning even more new mixes. I recall he spoke about this at the time too. Maybe the same ones or new ones?

I don’t know much else about the track and when you listen I don’t think you need me to actually type anymore. It’s one of my favourites and wanted to share it here. House music at its best.

That said this new mix is not so new. It provided the soundtrack to dinner last night where Wes joined me and I gave him a crash course in colouring in Cutlooseclub. I ‘superlaxed’ his food as well. He’s claiming it’s my cooking though anyone who knows me will vouch I’m a wizard in the kitchen as well as on the turntables.

There’s music from Gaz Nedada, Sylvi Foster, Heaven 17 and The The plus more. These were some of the records I was playing in the Soap Bar earlier in the evening during my Sankeys residency.

I’ll post a full track listing over the next few days.

It’s all about Dance Mania again. Even in the mid 90s Dance Mania were still delivering unshakable EPs like Hums.

It was the Summer of 95 and I was playing out regularly in Wigan [Yep that's right] promoting my own night with my friend. Looking back we didn’t really have a clue about the promotion thing, we just wanted to hear the music we were buying played out aloud.

For me in the early to mid 90s there was so much good stuff coming out of the US and those said records formulated the evenings listening. Labels like Vibe, Cajual and others were outputting good quality house music consistently and back then I couldn’t get enough.

‘Do it’ was an early evening staple with it’s laid back boogie groove and relentless vocal that’s so repetitive it leaves you wanting more. Again we probably weren’t 100% aware of what we were doing at the time and how important it would turn out to be years later when playing elsewhere. Sure we didn’t want to smash it out from the start though we’d be mixing and blending these records with boogie and the odd disco track. Where as later in the evening we’d be upping the stakes with music from Trackhead Steve, Robert Armani and DJ Funk and more. It was a refreshing change and allowed us to do more with the music compared to what was being released domestically.

The sun is shining and this makes perfect mid week listening even in January. Enjoy.

Here’s my first chart for this year. I’d probably say playlist as it’s hard to put such good music in priority order. So from the top.

Hot Coins – You can’t pray for your soul [Untracked]

When something like this drops it makes me kinda wish I was sometimes still playing at Sankeys. When I first started playing the Redlight it was records like this that I would push early on in the evening. They wouldn’t always work first time how ever a couple of weeks in the floor would fill. Lights down low. Plenty of cigarette and machine smoke blended. Perfect recipe for a Saturday evening out. You can’t pray for your soul just hooks you in. Go listen. Loud.

Smith & Mudd – The Delivery Man [Claremont 56]

Another amazing effort from Smith & Mudd on Claremont 56. I could listen to this on repeat. Apparently there’s only 500 of these available so I’d so go get one now. Like now. As I bet this is one of those tracks you’ll hear out in a couple of years time and be all over it kicking yourself. You know … asking yourself why you didn’t buy it the first time you heard it.

American Standard – Medinas Magic [American Standard]

A more than standard edit of Olivier Newton John’s – Magic. Bee Gees on the flip though the Neutron Bomb edit wins hands down for me. Controversial? Who cares. This reminds me of the 80s in the Summer at our house. It’s one of those tracks where you think if I edited this I would do this. If I did and I probably wouldn’t; I’d loose some of that vocal. Or would I?

Rune Lindbake – Bonat Synthesizer EP [Drum Island Norway]

Rune Lindbaek delivers a swift 4 track EP with some slow burning goodness all the way through. Hard to pick a standard out track though Dudes on a Harbour just edges slightly ahead of all the rest. Seek and you will know why.

Brassica – Illness from Awareness [Dissident]

This reminds me of some weird track that LastFm would serve up when you’re tuned to the obscure post punk and synth new wave radio station. John Foxx blended with Fad Gadet. I haven’t a clue whether it’s original work or an edit though there’s something about it that hits the mark for me. Dissident deliver.

Dorothys Fortress – Silencer [Destroy All Planets]

Destroy all planets. I hope not as we probably wouldn’t get another decent EP like this from what looks like a first release on the said label. Enter Castillo is the numero uno choice on the playlist here for what I can only describe as Miami Vice like sounds running through out it.Then again that could be enough to put anyone off. Not me. Revenger Of El Santoro. Yeah you know it and love it.

Ichisan / Nakova – Alpski Disco [Pizzico Nobel]

Pilot is top of the pops on this EP. It’s got that feel good thing all the way through it and just when you think it’s going to go all offside and into Rofo’s theme it cuts back to those feel good synths. Alpski is also worth a listen for more of the same smiles. Do you think these guys have been to Naive Melody or mates with Nicky Boon?

Messalina – Slow Blow [Messalina]

OK OK I know what you’re thinking. Slow Blow. Again. I really like this re edit. Pretty well excuted to be fair. The percussion sounds nice and extended and when it does drop it’s pretty well stitched together. There’s also an Alan Parsons edit on the EP worth checking out too. I think you already know which one I’m going to say therefore I won’t type it here.

Cage and Aviary – Mag Pie Edit [Astro Lab France]

Despite my love for all things Dissident and associated artists, labels and their releases taking up a decent sized section of my record shelf; I still don’t own a copy of that TV record Wes always plays. The 10″ Mag Pie edit gets the airtime here. It’s like something you’d hear on a Hardy tape. 32 minutes in and he’s pitching something right down. You then spend the next 10 minutes of your life trying to work out what it is. I’ve got a feeling it’s blindingly obvious. I didn’t even go out last night either.

Beppe Loda – Typhoon: Portrait Of The Electronic Years

Good friend all round DJ and producer Beppe Loda paints his portrait of Typhoon. Aptly titled The electronic years which I guess means there’s plenty more to come. I hope so. It’s hard to pick stand out tracks as there’s so many. I love Ralph Lundsten – Discophrenia as that was an early doors Soap Bar favourite. I recall it costing me some till and the robot artwork on the said release is something else. Worth picking up if you see it. Crash Course in Science – Flying Turns also gets an honorable mention. Remember that Strings of Life edit a few years before the Krivit one? Check out the other side that everyone misses for an excellent re work of Crash Course. This got plenty of airplay at the Redlight early on in the evening. Loud. Go find and you won’t be disappointed.

To say thanks for all the support this year Cutloose and Cosmic Disco have decided to join forces for a special one-off party. We’ve trawled the clubs/spaces/derelict warehouses of Manchester looking for the perfect setting to install the best possible sound-system we could lay our hands on, fly over our favourite DJ and round up 200 of our closest friends for one last blow-out before we start again in 2009.

Mark Seven will be making his Manchester debut for what is going to be a very special Xmas party on Saturday 27th December.

Mark is quickly gaining legendary status within the underground dance community. A renown record collector he’s also responsible for buying choice cuts for the fantastic Jus’ Wax records, where he regularly flies across the pond to pick up the finest collections from a number of legendary DJ’s & producers to bring back specifically your spotting perusal.

Mark is certainly no stranger to the underground music scene as his involvement goes as far back as the early 80’s, from promoting parties such as ‘Bizarre’ on the then fledgling Balearic scene, in addition to being a regular at the Rampling organised ‘Shoom’ events. In recent years, Mark has co-promoted ‘The Lodge’ and NY Social parties where he has introduced the likes of Prins Thomas & Phil Mison to the US scenes.

If this wasn’t enough, Mark is also responsible for the excellent Divine Edit 12″s on Creative Use (’Higher’ being a classic ‘end-of-nighter’) and with further edits and original productions scheduled for release in 2009. To say we are excited to bring him to Manchester is somewhat of an understatement.

We really hope as many of you can join us on the 27th for what is going to be a serious 6hrs of underground disco, late night basement action.

When, where and how much?

Saturday 27th November
10.00pm – 04:00am

Bookbinders
Minshull Street
Manchester
M4 6AY

£8 advance
£10 on the door

This is a free party (donations on the night welcome) and all you have to do is register your interest via our Mark Seven – EventWax page and follow the 3 easy steps to get your email confirmation.

This is a limited capacity event so once the tickets are gone; they really are gone! For this reason we strongly recommend you get a ticket/invite and arrive early to avoid disappointment.

The 1989 Tommy Musto production includes hip shaking percussion, quirky bass like sounds coupled with Sylvester samples that all come together to create a track that encapsulates for me what the Nu Groove sound was about.

That said we could probably cherry pick many more.

Back in 2007 DJ Spun’s offshoot label Tu Rong re-edited the track with Ray Mang on duty. They included the Hip House version which is here for your listening pleasure. If you can’t find the original then pick up the Tu Rong release. You won’t be disapointed.

The brainchild of veteran producers Morgan Geist and Darshan Jesrani, Metro Area was born out of the pair’s somewhat dichotomous love for both the old moods of R&B, disco and boogie and the more cutting-edge sound of innovative house and techno. Metro Area brings back the soulful experimentation of the early club classics – mixing live and electronic instruments. Simultaneously, the mood and minimalism of more recent dance music forms creep into the mix: Detroit’s cold futurism, Chicago’s abstract track-modes, and the warmth of New York and New Jersey’s deep house.

After over a year of late-night sessions in New Jersey and Manhattan – Metro Area burst onto the scene in 1999 with their self-titled debut 12″ featuring the cult smash “Atmosphrique.” With an angular bassline underpinned by a grungy 4/4 disco beat and the most distinctive claps this side of 1977, “Atmosphrique” sounds futuristic and retro at the same time, and spawned myriad heated debates concerning the record’s production date. Then came the simply amazing ‘Caught Up’ which left both DJs and dancers wanting more.

Currently staying busy with continued touring, solo remixes from Morgan and Darshan, new studios in Brooklyn, solo and side projects and the imminent release of a new Metro Area album and their new Fabric mix CD the music world can rest assured that Metro Area will continue to rock theories of time and space at Spektrum.

Us clowns at cutloose have plenty to say for ourselves at the best of times so thought it would be nice to give you the opportunity to fire some questions in the direction of NYC and find out more about Metro Area.

To leave your question, post in the comment box below and we’ll do the rest.

The best question wins two guest list places to our December party, tea at Jenko’s, a cashmere jumper from Mark and a trip on the log flume with Wes.

Beppe Loda is a music seeker, an eclectic music selector and a rare and obscure record collector. He’s a founder of the afro music movement as well as the forerunner of obscure disco, slow motion disco, Italosynth incorporating the industrial sound as well.

When he’s not DJing Beppe is a brilliant producer, a respected consultant and a refined record studio sound engineer. Beppe has remixed over 60 tracks of other artists and produced over 200 different dj sets with every kind of music.

Beppe often says “What pushes a true DJ to sacrificate himself while all the others enjoy the party?

It’s simple. The love of music.

We’re all pretty fanatical about Theo Parrish (Sound signature, 3 Chairs) and have literally travelled across the world to hear him play. Over the last 12 months we’ve talked about bringing Theo to Manchester ourselves. There’s been some notable appearances and most recently at the re-opened Paradise Factory. How ever I’d have to say my favourite night in the company of Theo was in December last year at Plastic People.

Theo is at his best in a small intimate room with a chest punching sound system. Plastics was just that.

However over the last few months David Vincent has been finalising his plans to open a new venue called Spektrum. With a 350 capacity, mind bending lights coupled with a hybrid Funktion 1 & Phazon sound system it seemed appropriate to ask “please can we put on a party?”

From that moment we went all out to bring Theo to Manchester again. Within the week Theo had agreed and said he was more than up for coming back to Manchester. We asked him how long he wanted to play and being the amazing guy that he is said 5 hours.

We were hardly going to say no were we?

Ticket information

Advance e-tickets are £10. You can buy these online from Skiddle which we recommend as it saves time, no paper tickets that might get lost and you get a nice SMS to your phone confirming everything.
